The USJ-R Baby Jaguars overcame an 18-point deficit late in the first half (39-21) and relied on their suffocating defense down the stretch to beat the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, 64-62, and bag third place in the CESAFI Season 23 juniors basketball tournament on Sunday, December 10, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The top-ranked Baby Jaguars enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage against the fourth-ranked Baby Lancers.

USJ-R outlasts UCLM, secures top spot

The University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars secured the number one spot in the elimination round after outlasting the University of Cebu-Lapulapu Mandaue Baby Webmasters, 61-57, earlier today in their CESAFI Season 23 juniors basketball showdown at the Cebu Coliseum.

Down 44-46 early in the fourth quarter, the Baby Jaguars unleashed an 11-0 blast highlighted by three straight triples by Jude Kyle Rueda, Chan Benedict Brigoli, and Clark Frederick Candia to make it a 55-46 lead for USJ-R with 5:07 left in the game.

Brigoli led the Baby Jaguars with his 12 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

With a twice-to-beat advantage, the Baby Jaguars will play against the fourth seed UV Baby Lancers in the semis.

USJ-R, UCLM battle for top spot today

A bragging right of being the top seed in the playoffs is at stake in today's encounter between the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars and University of Cebu-Lapulapu Mandaue Baby Webmasters at the Cebu Coliseum.

Game time is set at two in the afternoon.

Quite curiously, local basketball experts believe these two teams have another goal more than the top spot: that is to avoid a meeting with defending champions SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles in the semis.

The TOP FOUR seeds had already been completed in the high school division, except the ranking in the first three spots. The UV Baby Lancers are the fourth seed.

If USJ-R wins, SHS-AdC will tie UCLM and secure the twice-to-beat advantage by virtue of the winner-over-the-other rule.

If UCLM wins, USJ-R will still have a twice-to-beat edge in the semis against SHS-AdC.

The USJ-R Baby Jaguars have secured a twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinal after demolishing the Don Bosco Technical College Greywolves, 72-43, today in their CESAFI Season 23 juniors basketball encounter at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Baby Jaguars are now tied with UCLM at the top of the standings in the high school division.

They will play each other on Sunday (November 26) to dispute the number one spot at the end of the elimination round.

Tournament format rewards the Top 2 seeds a twice-to-beat incentive in the crossover semifinal round with the top seed playing against the number four seed and the second seed going up against the third seed.

Defending champion SHS-AdC is currently in third place with 7-2 win-loss record.

Meanwhile, UV, CEC, and UC Main are tied for fourth to sixth places at 6-3.

The Baby Jaguars (7-1) are one win away from securing an automatic twice-to-beat incentive in the semis.

They will wind up their elimination round campaign against University of Cebu-Lapulapu Mandaue on November 26.

USJ-R blows hot and cold in overtime loss vs. USPF

The USJ-R Jaguars went cold in the last 2:30 minutes in regulation and only scored two points in overtime to bow to the USPF Panthers, 55-63, on Saturday night, November 18, in their CESAFI Season 23 men's basketball encounter at the Cebu Coliseum.

Down 38-50 with more than seven minutes remaining in the game, the Jaguars went on a 13-0 run highlighted by a pull-up jumper by Karl Malone Ventura to give USJ-R a 53-50 lead with about two minutes and 30 seconds to go.

Both teams made key defensive stops down the stretch until a USPF booming triple from about 29 feet knotted the score at 53-all.
