Everyday PBA | League plans to give fans new viewing experience

Following the template used by the NBA, the Philippine Basketball Association intends to give its fans a whole new viewing experience as we embrace the new normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

League commissioner Willie Marcial told media during the zoom press conference on Thursday that they intend to use the same format used by the NBA to give the fans a chance to feel as if they’re all part of the action, just like when they’re watching live games.

“Gagawin rin natin yan. We will coordinate with our coverage teams sa Cignal and TV5 kung paano ang puwedeng gawin dyan na parang nanonood ng live yung mga fans katulad ng ginagawa ngayon ng NBA,” Marcial said.

In the NBA, teams hold games inside the bubble in Disneyland in Orlando without its usual audience that happens in the home and away format. But the league did a more clever approach by allowing the fans to be there, virtually, to cheer on their favorite teams. Hence, you could see them seated inside the venue during the actual coverage of the matches as if they’re watching live.

But outside of this new viewing experience, the league is also making sure it will make up for lost time as it will now hold games everyday in the resumption of this shortened season.

“Live tayo sa lahat ng platforms, sa TV channels natin --TV5, PBA Rush, One Sports and live streaming -- seven days a week,” Marcial added.

According to Marcial, the double header will still be implemented daily.

“First game will be 4 to 6 p.m., then the area will be sanitized, tapos resume tayo ng 8 to 10 p.m. for the second game,” added Marcial.

The league will have 11 games each for all teams in the elimination round. The top four teams will have a twice-to-beat advantage. Semifinals series will be a best-of-five affair while the finals will be best-of-seven.
