Behind every great dive instructor is someone who taught them how to teach. At Atmosphere, that someone is often Berlinda.

With almost 20 years in the industry, our Dive Centre Manager and PADI Course Director has shaped the careers of countless instructors through our joint IDC programme with Liquid Dumaguete. Her standards are high, and her passion for both diving and teaching is clear in everything she does.

If you’ve been thinking about taking the next step in your diving career, you’ll be in exceptional hands. For more information about our IDC programme, please email [email protected]

We love all marine animals, but if we have to choose, these are at the top of our list. And we're lucky that most of them can easily be found along the Dauin coast. Of course, we want to know your favorite too!

Nobody warns you about these before you sign up for the IDC, but we think most dive pro can relate:

1️⃣ You can’t watch a dive scene in a movie without criticizing the technique
Bad buoyancy, wrong hand signals, impossible dive times... Once your instructor brain kicks in, you can’t unsee it.

2️⃣ You start speaking in hand signals accidentally, even above water
“Okay”, “look at me”, “stop”: your hands do the talking before your mouth does.

3️⃣ Your Facebook friends list grows exponentially with people from all over the world
Every IDC, every course, every job brings new connections. Before you know it, your social feed is flooded with fellow dive pros and students.

4️⃣ You experience actual withdrawal symptoms on a rare dry day
No dives on the schedule? Yikes! You can't stop yourself from checking your dive computer to see when this surface interval will finally be over.

5️⃣ Your definition of “weekend” completely changes when every day could be a work day
Mondays and Fridays lose all meaning. Your weekends are whenever the schedule gives you one.

6️⃣ You start making life decisions based on proximity to the ocean
Where to live, where to travel, where to spend the holidays... Every decision gets filtered through one question: “How close is the water?”

7️⃣ You adopt the local dive community as your extended family
The people you work with, teach with, and dive with become more than colleagues. They become your support system and often your closest friends.

None of these show up in the IDC brochure, but they’re all part of the package. If you’re thinking about becoming a dive instructor, consider this your friendly heads up. 😉

Dive pros, what would you add to this list?

One of the things that makes IDP unique is that our candidates train across two different dive centers: Liquid Dumaguete and Atmosphere Resorts & Spa. Both are PADI 5-star Career Development Centers, but each has its own personality, pace, and guest profile.

👉 Liquid Dumaguete
Liquid is a boutique resort with a laid-back, down-to-earth vibe. The service is warm, the facilities are great, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Guests range from dedicated divers to travelers who love the easygoing feel of the place. For candidates, this environment is perfect for learning how a close-knit team operates and how to deliver high-quality dive experiences in a casual, personal setting.

👉 Atmosphere Resorts
Atmosphere is a luxury resort known for its high-end hospitality. The dive team works alongside other departments to deliver a resort-wide experience that matches the expectations of a luxury clientele. For candidates, this environment is ideal for understanding how a dive operation fits within a refined setting, including the attention to detail, professional presentation, and elevated guest interactions that come with it.

👉 What candidates gain from both
Both resorts attract a mix of divers and non-divers, but the pace, style, and overall vibe are noticeably different. Some candidates connect more with the relaxed feel of Liquid, others thrive in the luxury environment at Atmosphere. There’s no right or wrong; they’re simply different, and both offer valuable experience.

By training across both, our candidates learn to adapt their communication, teaching style, and professional presence to suit different settings. That versatility is what makes our graduates stand out when they start applying for jobs. Curious to see both for yourself? Visit our website or send us a message.

The weight system removal and replacement skill looks simple on paper, but it can trip students up more than you’d expect. It’s included in the Open Water course for good reason: in a real emergency, being able to remove your weights quickly could save your life. Here are some common challenges students face, and how to help them through it:

1️⃣ Fumbling with the buckle or weight pockets
Many students struggle to locate and release the buckle or pocket clips smoothly, especially while horizontal. Have them practice the motion on land first, with their eyes closed, until the muscle memory kicks in.

2️⃣ Losing control of the weights
Dropping weights or getting tangled in a belt is very common. Teach students to maintain a firm grip, and to always lay the belt across their lap (or hold the weight pockets carefully) before resecuring. Clear, step-by-step movements prevent drifting or accidental drops.

3️⃣ Buoyancy changes
Removing weights at depth can cause an unexpected shift in buoyancy. Remind students to be ready to vent air from their BCD as needed, and to stay aware of their position in the water column throughout the skill.

4️⃣ Twisting or incorrect reassembly
With weight belts, students sometimes thread them back through incorrectly, ending up with a twisted belt or buckle on the wrong side. Reinforce the “right-hand release” rule. With integrated systems, make sure students confirm the pockets are fully clipped in before resuming the dive.

This skill can be done with either a traditional weight belt or an integrated weight system, which has become increasingly common in recent years. Either way, students need to confidently remove and replace their weights both underwater and at the surface!

During the IDC, our candidates work with a mix of experienced dive professionals, each with their own role, expertise, and teaching style. Having a well-rounded team makes a real difference in instructor training. This is who you'll interact with as an IDP candidate:

👉 IDC Staff Instructor
IDC Staff Instructors are certified to assist Course Directors throughout the IDC. They’ve gone through additional training to evaluate instructor candidates and provide detailed feedback on skill demos and teaching presentations. They often serve as a bridge between the candidates and the Course Directors. At IDP, Wes and Rainier are IDC Staff Instructors.

👉 Master Instructor
A Master Instructor is a highly experienced PADI Instructor who has earned one of the most respected ratings in the industry. To qualify, they must have issued at least 150 certifications across multiple PADI course levels and hold a range of specialty instructor ratings. Master Instructors bring years of real-world teaching experience to the IDC. At IDP, this is Ulrika and Rae.

👉 Course Director
Course Directors lead the IDC. They’ve reached the highest professional rating in recreational scuba diving and are responsible for training the next generation of PADI Instructors. They oversee the full IDC program, deliver the core teaching sessions, and prepare candidates for the Instructor Examination. At IDP, Tim and Berlinda are both award-winning Course Directors.

Each role brings a different perspective. Course Directors provide the structure, standards, and overall direction. Master Instructors share years of hands-on teaching experience from the field. IDC Staff Instructors offer close mentorship and detailed feedback, often from a perspective that feels more relatable to candidates still finding their footing.

Together, this layered team ensures our candidates get the full picture of what it means to be a dive instructor, from the technical standards to the day-to-day reality of teaching real students.

18/10/2026

In the dive industry, becoming an Instructor is often treated as the natural next step after Divemaster. For many, it is. But it’s not for everyone! These are two very different jobs, and the right choice depends on what you actually want from your career, not what the industry tells you to want.

Here are some signs that staying a Divemaster might be the right call for you:

👉 You genuinely love guiding
Spotting critters, planning dives, leading groups – if that lights you up, there’s no reason to walk away from it. Great guides are highly valued, and specializing in guiding is a fulfilling career on its own.

👉 You prefer working with certified divers
Teaching involves working with brand-new divers who are often nervous and still figuring out their equipment. If you prefer diving with people who already know what they’re doing, instructing may feel less rewarding.

👉 You don’t want the extra responsibility
Being an Instructor means taking on professional and emotional responsibility for your students’ safety. For some, that’s exciting. For others, it’s a weight they’d rather not carry.

Signs that becoming an Instructor might be the right next step:

👉 You enjoy explaining things and helping others learn
Teaching requires patience and satisfaction from watching someone else grow. If this comes naturally to you, instructing can be very rewarding.

👉 You want variety in your workday
Instructing offers more variety than guiding: different courses, different student levels, different environments.

👉 You want more career flexibility
Instructor ratings open the door to specialties, technical diving, Staff Instructor roles, and even a Course Director path. If you’re thinking long-term, instructing expands your options.

There’s no right or wrong path, just the one that fits your goals and personality. Both Divemasters and Instructors are essential to the dive industry. If you’re trying to figure out which path is right for you, send us a message. We’re happy to help you think it through!

The faces of our candidates as they exit the pool after their final IE session really say it all!

This is the exact moment they heard everyone had passed their IE. All the pressure, nerves, and sleepless nights from the past few weeks disappear in an instant, and the realization sets in that they’re officially PADI instructors.

Weeks of hard work, early mornings, challenging feedback, and pushing past comfort zones have led to this moment. And for most of our candidates, it marks the start of a completely new chapter, in which their passion becomes their profession.

No matter how many IDCs we run, watching this moment never gets old. It’s one of our favorite parts of the job!
