Regarding the TIKBALANG: Some of you may remember a few years back when I made 3 webisodes on the history and evolution of some folkloric beings. One of the episodes was on the Tikbalang. A challenge in this episode was proving the image of a horse was present in the Philippines before the Spanish arrived. I got A LOT of sh*t for that. The general thinking has opened up in the last several years, but even in 2015 it wasn’t common to break the current thoughts surrounding Philippine history. Essentially, I am always trying to throw out the notion that the archipelago’s history is divided as pre-colonial and post-colonial. There is a long and beautiful history that started millenniums before.
In this episode I hypothesized that early Filipinos were exposed to the image of the horse through Chinese trade - they had also migrated from areas that had exposure to horses and the Hindu image of Hayagriva. You can watch the documentary here: https://www.aswangproject.com/tikbalang-documentary/
In any case, I’m always looking for new pieces of information to move my hypothesis into the realm of theory. I found a very compelling one while making my way through some of Henry Otley Beyer’s work. A carved horse head from approximately 300CE, providing evidence that the image of the horse existed in Luzon more than 1600 years ago - 1200 years before the Spanish.
This doesn’t make my hypothesis conclusive, but it certainly helps me re-examine it and gives more confidence in presenting the ideas.
I really can’t express how much I love doing this.
