Are your basic stances falling apart when under pressure?
We often obsess over picture-perfect forms during Kihon and Ido Geiko, only to throw them out the window the second sparring starts. But as Kancho drops some absolute truth in this clip: you cannot compartmentalize your training.
The mechanics we drill into our basic stances, locking in our structure, pulling straight back, and moving without breaking our center axis, are exactly what keep us from folding under an opponent's pressure. If your hips drop and your chin pops up the moment you block a high kick, your basics aren't translating during a real fight. From standing drills to Kata, it’s all one connected thread.
Train with total consistency so that when the heat is on, your foundation holds strong. Don’t just memorize the movements; make them come alive when you fight.

It is easy to get sloppy with our stance when we are tired, letting our knees flare out and our pulling hands get lazy. But Kancho Matsui gives a massive reality check here: true power and balance in Kyokushin do not come from wild, wide movements. They come from keeping everything tight and connected to your center. Whether you are throwing a front kick or a high roundhouse, your legs and arms shouldn't be doing all the heavy lifting on their own. The actual control needs to come straight from the "hara" (core) and your hips.
Your hands are not just there for balance; they need to be ready to attack, block, or feint at any split second. You have to move your entire body as one single, sharp unit, snapping your hips back into the strike rather than just pushing through.

Heavy focus on the fundamentals last Thursday night. We dedicated the session to Kihon, Ido Geiko, and Kata. We broke down the basics, put them into motion, and really dialed in the details on our forms.
It takes a lot of mental endurance to stay sharp through the hundredth rep, but the effort was definitely there.

Thursday Basics, Moving, and Kata Training
木曜日の基本・移動・型稽古
Last Thursday’s session was a great reminder of why we never stop working on the Kihon. Spent the evening really working in on our basics and movement drills, making sure every stance, block, and strike was sharp and intentional.
Building a solid foundation is what Kyokushin Karate is all about, and the energy during the training was exactly where it needed to be.
Thank you everyone for your hard work and cooperation. Osu!

Most of us think we know how to breathe. But when exhaustion hits during a tough round, our first instinct is to panic and desperately suck in air. In this message, Kancho Shokei Matsui breaks down exactly why that doesn't work, using a brilliant analogy: a cup of water.
If your cup is already half-full of old, stagnant water, you can only pour a little bit of fresh water into it. To get a fully fresh cup, you have to completely empty it first. Your lungs work the exact same way. We spend so much time focusing on breathing in, but the real secret to stamina and recovery is learning how to breathe out. You have to exhale entirely and squeezing every last drop of carbon dioxide from your core before your body can actually take in the fresh oxygen it needs to keep fighting.
Whether you are hitting the bags, doing kumite, or just doing basics, don't just go through the motions mechanically. Put your mind into the movement, control the tension, and remember to empty the cup.

Just going through the motions isn’t enough. In this lecture, Shokei Matsui Kancho reminds us that every single strike, block, and stance needs real intention behind it. It’s easy to just throw a punch or mindlessly practice a downward block because you were told to, but if you aren’t picturing an actual opponent and understanding the exact purpose of the technique, you’re moving mindlessly.
Kyokushin requires total focus. Your physical movements are a direct reflection of your mental awareness, meaning you should never train without knowing exactly why you are making your next move.
Next time you train, ask yourself: are you just moving, or are you moving with purpose?
