The speargun review you are going to read represents our view on what is the best stock gun available today. It’s designed to help our friends and followers to get the best gun for their hard-earned money. We went to the largest spearfishing shop in Aussie and played with various guns, including Picasso, Rob Allen, Pathos, Salvimar, Riffe, Aimrite. Those are the most popular guns in Australia and the USA. You may be familiar or even own one of them. You may like our review, hate it, have your own opinion. We don’t care. We don’t represent the brands we reviewed, but we can source those guns at competitive prices. We did supply a few RA in the past to our happy customers. We are able to source and deliver most of the guns to the Philippines except the brands we don't admire.
The HH or Hammerhead guns are popular in both the USA and the PH, and most of you know them well. As for us, they are somewhat basic, without anything fancy or special worth considering. Just affordable OK guns to shoot a fish.
As for shooting fish, no gun will make you a better spearfisherman. Mc Juv Ontal Piñero was consistently shooting fish even with a wooden stick, aka local hand made gun, however, he is now using one of the most popular brands, the Rob Allen, and he definitely kills more fish with it. So, a better gun does kill more fish because of many factors: better handle, less recoil, longer stretched rubber laying parallel to the barrel, stiff and straight shaft, less or no barrel flex, some other factors.
So let's go to the guns review. We inspected:
- Picasso Magnum Roller,
- Rob Allen Tuna,
- Rob Allen Samburu Carbon (New),
- Rob Allen Tuna Roller,
- Pathos Sniper,
- Pathos Sniper-Roller,
- Pathos Laser Carbon Pro,
- Pathos Carbon-Roller,
- Pathos Laser Open Pro,
- Salvimar Sapiens Carbon,
- Riffe New Euro Semi-Enclosed,
- Aimrite Carbon,
- Aimrite Roller
We only compared 3 brands we liked the most, and, they are Pathos, Riffe, Rob Allen. No surprise… We tried to compare apples to apples, guns with in the same price range.
We hatted latest Picasso Magnum with a cuttlefish bone profile, cause even a 110 gun showed a significant barrel flex under load…
Nothing special about Aimrite: outdated low positioned handle, standard cylindrical barrel, very basic muzzle, overpriced…However, barrels are strong... We tested them in the past and they showed very strong recoil if overpowered due to low handle position. Not interested.
As for Salvimar, they look futuristic on a wall but once you pick them they don’t seem to be well made and robust for the harsh Philippine conditions. May be ok for Meds. Too light for the equipped shafts and rubbers. Even the most expensive carbon, the one with a cuttlefish barrel, the Salvimar Sapiens Carbon, resembles somewhat assembled from made in China parts. You can source those barrels from Alibaba. Some parts also look like made by Turkish manufacturers. We won’t rely on them as the main gun. You never see any trophy fish taken with Salvi anywhere in the world. Although Salvi shafts are good and you can kill fish with them.
And the winners are:
1) Best roller gun – Pathos Carbon-R 100,
because it has a second kicker rubber, 3 pretention positions under the barrel and the great D’Angelo 2 with the universal handle grip. It accepts any shaft in a range of 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8mm. The kicker rubber allows roller setup with barrels over 100, e.g. 110 or 120.
2) Best Carbon gun – Pathos Carbon 130/140,
because the barrel is the best and the thickest ID26/OD30mm, 2mm walls no flex even on 140cm gun. Best rubber stretch: Pathos 130 has the similar rubber stretch as Rob Allen 140. It has a low-profile muzzle. It’s light enough to dive deep and stay long under water. And it has 2nd best stock stainless steel shaft with a rest tab.
3) Best Aluminium gun – Pathos Sniper 125
Because the barrel has a cuttlefish profile, so you can easily move the gun in a horizontal direction, it has a floater to stabilise the gun, it has the best muzzle, allowing both rubbers to lay perfectly horizontal, it has the best full stainless steel trigger with a D’Angelo 3 universal handle.
4) Best Muzzle – Pathos Sniper
Best muzzle – full stop.
5) Best handle/trigger – Pathos Sniper D’Angelo 3
Improved thicker sear from D’Angelo 2. Great handle grip.
6) Best stock shaft – Riffe Euro
Riffe shafts act as spring steel although they are strong and stainless. Best shafts no comments.
7) Best stock rubber – Rob Allen
Rob Allen found a great formulation for their rubber although it’s made in Mexico by PrimeLine (USA). Very reactive and the stock rubbers are a bit long, 320% elongation, so you can start with relatively easy load and progress to a snappier rubbers by cutting them shorter, up to 350% elongation.
😎 Best usable rubber stretch – Pathos Sniper 125
+8+10cm longer than Rob Allen or Aimrite.
9) Best reel mount – Rob Allen Vecta 2 handle
Easy to convert your setup from direct to float to a reel/no float. Simply the best.
10) Best gun for money – Pathos Laser Open Pro 120
The cheapest best gun full stop. D’Angelo 1 reliable mechanism, specially coated none slippery barrel, additional stretch due to reverse trigger, low profile muzzle, second best stock shaft, won’t break your bank.
And the winner… Best overall gun – Pathos Sniper 125
Because it’s the best in all departments: great balance, second best shaft, best aluminium cuttlefish barrel with a floater, best muzzle, best trigger, great high positioned handle to comfy handle recoil.
Pathos Sniper and Sniper-R (Roller) share the same handle, trigger, cuttlefish shaped barrel and shaft.
Both have floaters. Pathos Sniper-R has a floater with 3 pretention position for the underneath rubber.
1st runner up – Rob Allen Tuna 140
Great work horse. Very reliable. However, high profile muzzle obstructs the aiming sight, plastic trigger, loading butt to be ordered separately, strong but quick rusted spring steel notched shafts without sharkfins.
2nd runner up – Riffe Euro 130
Good gun but way too expensive: order a local Champ Gun with the Neptonics trigger and Riffe shaft and you will have the almost same gun for half the money.
