THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHT TO ROAD SPACE & TO ROAD SAFETY 17/01/2014

"THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHT TO ROAD SAFETY AND FOR OUR RIGHT TO OUR PROTECTED SPACE ON THE ROAD"

Just last November 17, 2012 Saturday when most of our cycling enthusiasts & weekend bikers were busy preparing themselves for the upcoming fun ride : 14th Tour of the Fireflies, our fellow everyday bike commuter & advocate Jojie Puricallan, 43, was only pedaling his way home to Tagumpay Village, San Jose, Montalban, Rizal as he has been normally doing for the past years & decades since.

In his earnest desire to take care of his family & to have savings on transportation expenses, he chooses to bike to & from his place of work inspite of the obvious danger & horror that the immense dump trucks plying the area pose to defenseless & vulnerable bike commuters like him.

After fighting it out in a nearby hospital, Jojie passed away due to severe loss of blood from mortal wounds sustained with his fatal encounter with an unforgiving menace of the iron dump truck that ended his hopes and aspirations.

JOJIE IS NOT ALONE.

With deep sadness & anger, he joins the 1.3 Million Fatalities and the 50+ Million Dismembered & Disabled people robbed of their dreams in a violent clash with death.

After 11 years, the world still mourns for the 2,976 who lost their lives in the 9/11 World Trade Center Terrorist Attacks.

But every single day, close to 3,300+ people are killed on the world's most dangerous highways. And for the past 11 years, there has already been a massacre of 13.5 MILLION.

TODAY, it is already the TOP 1 CAUSE OF DEATH
for those falling in the 15 to 30 Age Bracket.

It is a Humanitarian Crisis of epidemic proportions.
It is a Global, Local, and Grassroots horror.

It is not their fate. It is not by design. It is not right.
There are no accidents. There is only negligence.

JOJIE IS NOT ALONE.

Last May 13, 2011, Professor Lourdes "Chit" Simbulan was mercilessly crushed to her death inside a taxi bringing her to Ayala Technohub in front of the Killer Highway : Commonwealth.

Since then, the fight was taken up by her surviving husband Professor Roland Simbulan. And with a strong bond that propels us, he has formed the Families of Road Victims & Survivors (FRVS) as a support community that aims to be there when it matters as well as a spark of hope for the long road ahead.

JOJIE IS NOT ALONE.

Fervently, we pray that we can find strength in one another.

OUR SITUATION

We are reminded of fellow bike commuters like Orlan Vibar, 48, security guard at Commonwealth Village who pedals 30 kilometers a day from San Mateo, Rizal just to make ends meet for his family. And we also recall Dennis Alemania, 48, Baranggay Tanod in Bagbaguin, Valenzuela who, despite his amputated arm from a factory accident, still pedals his way to work.

Thankfully, Orlan & Dennis are still spared from being killed.

But Alfredo Padilla, 70, construction worker was not as lucky
when a 18 wheeler trailer truck crushed him to death along
United Nations Avenue 2 years ago, June 2010.

Earning only a meager $USD 80 a month, the family's pain was further deepened when they could not even claim their father's remains for almost 2 weeks much less give him a decent burial given the steep fees charged by the funeral parlor.

Like the almost 8,000,000+ underemployed & the 2,000,000+ unemployed working class & struggling labor sector, biking & cycling is not just a plain advocacy on environment.

It is not just wearing costumes & sprucing up our bicycles.
It is not just enjoying free entry fees to public transport.
It is not just lobbying for clean air & sustainable transport.
It is not just approving Carless Days in pocket areas.
It is not just donating bicycles for a handful of recipients.
It is not just haggling for bike parking & bike2work programs.
It is not just petitioning for bicycle infrastructure & systems.

On one hand, we acknowledge the collective efforts.
But it has simply become a fight for LIFE or DEATH.

Beyond the statistics, ONE DEATH IS ONE TOO MANY.

At all costs, we have the INALIENABLE HUMAN RIGHT
to our individual & collective safety on the roads.

"WE FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHT TO ROAD SAFETY AND FOR OUR RIGHT TO OUR PROTECTED SPACE ON THE ROAD"

OUR TRIBUTE

This coming Sunday November 25, 2012. Jojie Puricallan will be laid to rest. But like our dedication to Alfredo Padilla's memory, we will continue this struggle until those who need to act will wake up & get things done for the less fortunate everyday commuters.

Those who may wish to send their condolences & intentions of support to Jojie's Family, kindly check the Montalban Cycling Club's online home in this provided link.
