Barotac Viejo Clinches Back-to-Back PIVA Title in Thrilling Championship Duel
In a heart-pounding finale that had fans on their feet from start to finish, Barotac Viejo National High School defended their crown and secured a back-to-back PIVA meet championship with a hard-fought victory over Culasi National High School at the Tamasak Arena, Barotac Nuevo, on Sunday afternoon.
The reigning champions from Barotac Viejo showed their trademark grit and composure, overcoming a late-game surge from Culasi to claim the title, 80-70 in front of a roaring crowd of students, alumni, and local basketball fans.
Culasi came out strong early, fueled by sharpshooting and aggressive defense that kept Barotac Viejo on their heels in the first half. But the defending champions rallied behind the shooter Joel Elisan who sparked a third-quarter comeback with crucial baskets that turned the game’s momentum.
The final minutes were a test of nerves, with both squads trading baskets and defensive stops. Culasi threatened to clawed back after trimming the lead to just 4 points in the final minute, but Barotac Viejo’s relentless defense and clutch free throws sealed the victory — and their second straight PIVA championship title.
“This one means even more,” said Barotac Viejo head coach Vicente Baticbatic holding back emotion as his team celebrated on the court. “Winning once is hard, but defending the title proves the heart and discipline of these players.”
Culasi, despite falling short, earned praise for their resilience and sportsmanship. Their standout guard abuacan led their team keeping his team in contention until the very end.
As the buzzer sounded, Barotac Viejo’s bench erupted, players embracing each other in Tamasak Arena — a fitting scene for a dynasty in the making.
With back-to-back championships now under their belt, Barotac Viejo National High School has firmly established itself as the powerhouse of the PIVA meet, setting the stage for what could be a historic three-peat run next year.
