What an incredible piece of history and remarkable football legacy from our very own hometown, rooted right here in Negros! ⚽💚🇵🇭
Before Paulino Alcántara, there was another Filipino who wore the famous colours of FC Barcelona. His name was Manuel Amechazurra.
Born in La Carlota, Negros Occidental in 1888 to Spanish parents, Manuel was a true son of our soil and the very first Asian-born footballer to ever play in Europe.
He played 137 matches for Barça in the early 1900s, anchoring their defense.
To survive in an era before million-dollar contracts, this boy from Negros actually taught English to Barcelona's board of directors just to get by.
But this isn't just a story hidden away in Spanish archives.
This is a story that breathes right in our own backyard.
If you take a drive through Negros Occidental, just about an hour away from Bacolod, you are passing through the very land that raised football royalty.
In fact, the legacy is so tangible that his older brother’s house is still standing proud in Silay City today.
Think about that for a moment.
You can walk the same streets, look at the same heritage walls, and realize that a century ago, a family from our province crossed the ocean and helped write the foundation of one of the greatest football clubs in human history.
Amechazurra paved the way from La Carlota.
Alcántara followed from Iloilo.
They weren't just playing on the world's biggest stage; they were carrying the spirit of Western Visayas with them.
The next time you pass through Silay or La Carlota, look around. History didn't just happen in Spain it started right here at home.
