Pickleballâs development before 2000 was relatively quiet compared to its explosive growth in the 21st century, but there were important stages that laid the groundwork for todayâs popularity. Hereâs a breakdown of how it evolved up to 2000:
⸝
1960s â The Invention
⢠1965 (Bainbridge Island, Washington): Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum created the game as a family backyard activity using a lowered badminton net, ping-pong paddles, and a perforated plastic ball.
⢠The name âpickleballâ is often said to come from the Pritchardsâ dog Pickles (though Joan Pritchard also said it reminded her of âpickle boatsâ in crew, made up of leftover rowers).
⸝
1970s â From Backyard to Organized Play
⢠By the early 1970s, pickleball had spread among friends and neighbors on Bainbridge Island and then beyond the Seattle area.
⢠First permanent pickleball court: built in 1967 in Pritchardâs backyard.
⢠1972: Pickle-Ball Inc. was formed to protect the sportâs identity and begin selling paddles, balls, and nets.
⢠1976: The first known tournament was held at South Center Athletic Club in Tukwila, WAâmostly tennis players competed.
⸝
1980s â Steady Growth
⢠Paddles evolved from wood to lightweight composite materials, improving playability.
⢠The game slowly spread beyond Washington into other U.S. states, often in YMCAs, community centers, and PE programs.
⢠Seniors in retirement communities (especially in Arizona, Florida, and California) began adopting pickleball because it was easier on the body than tennis.
⢠The sport was still grassrootsâspread mainly by word of mouth and small groups.
⸝
1990s â National Recognition Begins
⢠Pickleball expanded to all 50 U.S. states during this decade.
⢠1990: Courts began appearing in community centers and parks across the U.S.
⢠1997: The game lost co-founder Joel Pritchard (who had also been a U.S. Congressman and Washington State Lieutenant Governor).
⢠1999: Pickleball made its way online for the first timeâan early website (Pickleball Stuff) began promoting the game, selling equipment, and connecting players nationally.
⸝
By 2000 â Foundation Laid
⢠Pickleball was still relatively unknown compared to tennis or racquetball, but it had:
⢠A dedicated, if small, base of enthusiasts.
⢠Organized play in retirement communities.
⢠Tournaments held at the local and regional level.
⢠The first online presence to connect players across states.
⢠The sport was well-positioned for the explosive boom that came in the 2000s and 2010s.
⸝
In short: Prior to 2000, pickleball evolved from a backyard family invention to a niche sport with small but growing pockets of players, especially among seniors. The groundworkâequipment manufacturing, official rules, early tournaments, and a budding communityâwas firmly in place, waiting for the 21st-century surge.
