WHEN A PLAYER WALKS AWAY, WHAT SHOULD A COACH DO?

In football, players leave teams.

Sometimes there is a valid reason—family, finances, school, health, or a situation that genuinely needs attention.

But what happens when a player leaves simply because they no longer believe in the team?

Or because they think another team will make them look better?

This is where coaching becomes more than tactics.

A coach can teach passing, positioning, pressing, finishing and discipline.

But can a coach teach loyalty?

Can a coach teach a young player that confidence isn't something you find by jumping to the strongest team?

Sometimes, confidence is built by staying when things are difficult.

The uncomfortable truth is this:

A team will never become strong if everyone leaves the moment they stop believing.

Imagine a player saying:

"Coach, I'm leaving because I don't think this team can win."

Fair enough.

But what message does that send to the teammates who stayed?

To the goalkeeper who kept showing up after conceding five goals?

To the defender who played through mistakes?

To the teammate who stayed because he believed they could become better together?

And here's the other side.

Coaches also need to look in the mirror.

If players constantly want to leave, maybe it's not always an attitude problem.

Maybe they feel unheard.

Maybe they don't feel valued.

Maybe they don't trust the coach.

Maybe the environment has stopped being healthy.

So where is the line between protecting a player's confidence and teaching a player commitment?

A good coach shouldn't beg a player to stay.

But a good coach shouldn't celebrate quitting either.

Sometimes the best lesson a young athlete can learn isn't how to win.

It's how to stay, struggle, improve, and earn the right to say, "We did it together."

Because football isn't only about finding the team that looks like a winner.

Sometimes...

it's about becoming the reason your team becomes one.

Now here's the question:

If your player wants to leave because he has lost confidence in his team, would you let him go—or would you fight to make him believe again?

It’s about learning to show up.

To believe in yourself.
To trust your teammates.
To get back up after a mistake.
And to respect the game and the people playing it with you.

Discipline. Confidence. Teamwork. Resilience. Respect.

These are the lessons that stay with children long after the final whistle.

Because sometimes, the most important things a child learns on the football pitch have nothing to do with the score.

​Our CIFA U8 put on an absolute clinic at the Unity Cup yesterday! Dominant performance from start to finish, showing off the grit, teamwork, and sharp finishing they’ve been working so hard on in training.
