To the parents who are so dedicated to their children's sports:

A friend recently asked me...

"Why spend so much time and money on your child to train in competitive sports or any other activity?"

Here’s my answer:

I’ll be honest, I’m not paying for my son to just train and play. Do you know what I’m actually paying for?

I’m paying for my son to learn discipline.

I’m paying for him to understand how to take care of his body and mind.

I’m paying for him to learn teamwork and how to be a good teammate.

I’m paying for him to deal with disappointment when things don’t go as expected and to realize that he has to work harder.

I’m paying for him to learn how to set and reach his goals.

I’m paying for him to understand that success doesn’t happen overnight and that it takes hours and hours of hard work and dedication.

I’m paying for the opportunity for him to form lifelong friendships.

I’m paying for him to spend time on the field, not in front of a screen.

I’m paying for the moments when he’s so exhausted that all he wants is to lay down. In those moments, there’s no time to be lazy or get distracted by negative influences.

I’m paying for the valuable life lessons this amazing sport teaches: responsibility, humility, dedication, friendship, and more.

I could go on, but to sum it up:

I’m not just paying for training. I’m paying for the opportunities this sport gives my son to develop valuable skills and attributes that will serve him throughout his life and help him appreciate life itself.

From what I’ve seen so far, this has been my best investment.
