PAALAM LEADS PINOY BOXERS ACCELERATE 2026 ASIAN GAMES PREPARATION IN EUROPE
🥇🥊
The Philippine National Boxing Team wrapped up a highly successful European tour, capturing four gold medals across elite tournaments in Serbia and the Netherlands to build crucial momentum for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya this September.
Headlining the strategic buildup was Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam, who made a triumphant return to the ring at the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands after being sidelined during the first leg in Serbia due to illness. Utilizing the tournament as a vital competitive benchmark, Paalam dominated the Men’s 55kg division and outclassed England's Abdul Burton via unanimous decision in the finals, but the definitive statement of his campaign came in a marquee semifinal showdown where he displayed elite tactical precision to edge out reigning Paris Olympics silver medalist Billal Bennama of France via a thrilling 4-1 split decision.
Complementing Paalam's veteran brilliance was a spectacular double-gold sweep from young standout Clark Vicera in the Men's 50kg division. Vicera proved unstoppable across both tournament legs, first capturing the gold at the 63rd Belgrade Winner Elite Boxing Tournament in Serbia by dismantling top prospects from Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye. Days later, he carried his momentum to the Netherlands for the Eindhoven Box Cup, displaying immense grit in the finals by overcoming a tough first-round deficit against the larger Ruslan Bednychenko of Ukraine to sweep the remaining rounds and secure his second consecutive gold medal.
The rest of the Philippine delegation likewise delivered powerhouse performances to round out the historic European campaign. Veteran Riza Pasuit added a third gold medal to the tally by completely shutting down the Women’s 57kg field in Belgrade, showcasing clinical dominance by winning unanimous decisions against Canada, Greece, and Türkiye without losing a single scorecard, while Paul Julyfer Bascon chipped in a hard-fought bronze in the Men’s 60kg class.
This high-caliber exposure against world-class opposition proves the national pool is firmly on track for continental success, with ABAP President Marcus Manalo noting, "They showed skill and determination in every match... This is a sign that we’re heading in the right direction as we look forward to the upcoming Asian Games."

🇵🇭 PINOY PRIDE ON THE MAT! 🤼♂️
The Philippine wrestling scene just got a massive boost as Filipino-American standout Matthew James Ramos officially takes the steps to represent the Philippines.
With roots tracing back to Basista, Pangasinan, through his father Crisante, Matt has long dreamed of carrying the Three Stars and a Sun. During his Senate hearings in May 2026, the 25-year-old expressed that his desire to compete for the country is fueled by the values of hard work and faith passed down by his family—vowing to give his all to bring home international glory.
Before making the move to represent the Philippines, Matt built an elite resume representing the United States on the global stage. His crowning achievement came in 2018 when he captured the Gold Medal at the Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, famously pinning Japan's Kota Takahashi in the 51kg finals.
He continued his dominance winning the 2022 U.S. Open Championship at 57kg. These victories, combined with his legendary NCAA career at Purdue—where he became a two-time All-American and the 2023 National Runner-Up—cement his status as a world-class wrestler.
Having officially transitioned into a coaching role at Purdue in 2025, Matt is now fully focused on the international freestyle circuit under the Philippine flag. While he is currently clearing the final hurdles of his citizenship bid to begin his medal haul for us, his sights are set firmly on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
