The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) invites students, teachers, researchers, history enthusiasts, and members of the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN) to the third installment of the Samuel K. Tan Lecture Series.

Historian and Researcher Dr. Ros Costelo will discuss the remnants of the Filipino diaspora in 19th Century Spain through the use of a Museum-Archive and existing urban spaces. She will share information on some institutions in the city that hold untapped archival sources for those who research on the Spanish Philippines.

The event is NHCPโ€™s contribution to the nationwide celebration of October as Museums and Galleries Month. This also forms part of the NHCPโ€™s observance of 2026 as the Year of Philippine Diplomatic History and Diaspora under the Dekada ng Kasaysayan (2023-2033) by virtue of Proclamation No. 396, s. 2023. This is a timely occasion to revisit the diverse communities and cross-cultural encounters that form part of Philippine history.

Last midnight, I had the privilege of delivering my final on-site lecture for TELUS Digital Philippines (TDP) for the year: โ€œLuna y Hidalgo: Art, Empire, & Nation,โ€ at the TELUS Digital Philippines McKinley Exchange. The lecture was also livestreamed internally for TDP team members, allowing colleagues from other sites to join the discussion.

So far, I have had the opportunity to deliver lectures at their McKinley West, Vertis North, Araneta, McKinley Exchange, and Pavia (Iloilo) sites. This lecture was a fitting way to conclude a year of on-site engagements with TDP. But I still have webinars and historical tours lined up for TDP for the rest of the year.

In the lecture, I shared biographical notes on Juan Luna and Fรฉlix Resurrecciรณn Hidalgo, focusing on their artistic training, development, and formation as artists and patriots. This was followed by an analysis and appreciation of their selected works. More importantly, I situated their lives and artistic productions within the complex intersections of Spanish colonialism, ilustrado culture, artistic cosmopolitanism, and the emergence of the Filipino nation. More broadly, I also introduced TELUS team members to cultural and visual history as approaches to understanding the past.

Alvin Campomanes Historical Tours and Consulting sincerely thanks TELUS Digital University (TDU) or the continuing opportunity to bring Philippine history, art, and culture into their workplace. Maraming-maraming salamat po.

Thank you, too, to Mr. Francis Dador Jr. for his excellent work as emcee, and for helping make another successful TDU event possible.
