Why do we live Japanese city bikes? These single speeds, more popularly known as Mamacharis, have a specific ratio which we love to term as a "walking" ratio. Simply put, it's an "easy spinning" single gear set-up that requires roughly as much effort as walking, which makes for a very comfortable ride on flats and is not too hard to pedal uphill. Since the bike makers (Bridgestone, Miyata, Maruishi) don’t list gear ratios on their websites, I actually looked up the gear ratios of mama-chari singles (in the 10,000 to 20,000 yen range) to see what they were. I counted the number of teeth of front and rear gears at a bicycle shop. Only three ...

JUST IN FROM MILAN!!!
The Boss Kuya Louie found these 2 time capsules in a yard and our excitement is through the roof! The first bike is a heavily pantographed Fausto Coppi road bike with the very practical RX-100 groupset. The second is a single speed Longhi gentleman's roadster with unusual (for Italian bikes) 26 x 1 3/8 or 650a tires.
Both are in original, untouched condition and probably will be shipped to Manila in the future.

1973 Elswick-Hopper Safeway English Roadster. One of those bikes that don't scream at you with tech and accessories, but lets the ride speak for itself. You don't mash the crank to get it up to speed, you merely guide the pedals and feel the bike roll like a Bentley.

Didn't want the grey Pirelli tires to go to waste so I thought of putting them onto the 3rd Klein. It turned out to be a 180 degree shift from the colorful livery of the previous two, now sporting a monochrome black, grey and silver aesthetic.

So the Klein I stole the tires off needed a pair. We had red Kenda Slicks lying around so we figured "why not make a USA themed bike for an icon from the USA?"
It's a work in progress. Needs more red and white bits. Maybe the cables.
