In 1991 Patrick Ewing, ready to leave NY, had a clause in his contract which stated that he would become a free agent if he wasn’t among the four highest paid players in the league during the 1991-92 season. The Warriors plotted to restructure a reluctant Chris Mullin's contract to push his ahead of Ewing, triggering the clause and freeing Ewing to join Mullin, Tim Hardaway & Mitch Richmond's RunTMC. However the Knicks threatened to sue and the Warriors backed off, keeping Ewing in NY.

In 2000, the Detroit Pistons traded Grant Hill to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins—a move that would quietly reshape both franchises.
That same summer, Orlando went all-in. They signed rising superstar Tracy McGrady, drafted future Rookie of the Year Mike Miller, and were reportedly on the verge of landing Tim Duncan in free agency.
Duncan strongly considered joining the Magic to form a Big Three with McGrady and Hill—especially with Shaquille O'Neal having just left the Eastern Conference. On paper, it was a potential dynasty and a direct challenge to Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
But the deal ultimately fell apart. Head coach Doc Rivers reportedly denied Duncan’s request to allow his family to travel on the team plane—a decision that ended any chance of him going to Orlando.
What could have been one of the greatest teams ever assembled never came to be—and remains one of the biggest “what ifs” in NBA history.
