The Philippines as a country has not been a big player in the representation of Fencing as a sport in the history of the Olympic Games as it has been more than three decades since a fencer has represented the country at the showpiece event.

However, the national fencing team and Noelito Jose are hoping to end Philippines’ prolonged drought when they participate in the Asia-Oceania Zonal Qualifying Tournament, scheduled to take place in Dubai from April 27 to 28.

The Asia-Oceania Zonal Qualifying Tournament is the last Olympic qualifier for the fencers to grab an Olympic spot. Jose, Samantha Catantan, Nathaniel Perez, and Hanniel Abella will be the Filipino fencers who will look to secure the lone berth in their respective categories.

Jose and Abella are currently in South Korea for training while Catantan is in the United States of America (USA) where she recently participated in the NCAA Fencing Championship.

Jose is yet to qualify for the Olympics during his career, having won the bronze medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and silver medals in the 2021 and 2023 edition of the games.

For him, securing qualification for the Olympic Games is a dream before he retires from the sport.

“It will not be easy but it is not impossible. We have prepared well for this competition. It is not just about what you can do physically. Your attitude during the competition will create a huge impact,” Jose said as quoted by The Rappler.

“Before I retire - because it is exhausting to train every day, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally - I told myself I want to make the Olympics. Of course, I also want a medal. I need to achieve that because you train to become better and to achieve your goals. That is my next goal: to make the Olympics,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Walter Torres was the last Filipino fencer to qualify for the Olympic Games, with it coming back in 1992.
