As an archipelago, the Philippines is surrounded by water and enriched by diverse water bodies that sustain the countryโ€™s natural resources.

Beneath the seemingly calm seas lies a complex underwater landscape. Bathymetric maps reveal features like deep trenches, ridges, and vast plains, similar to landforms seen above sea level. These maps help in navigation, studying marine ecosystems, and identifying hazards.

Around the Philippines, varying shades show shallow coastal areas and deep ocean basins. One notable feature is the Philippine Trench, reaching depths over 10,000 meters.

The Philippine Sea is deeper than nearby western seas, while underwater formations like Benham Rise highlight the regionโ€™s diverse seafloor, showing how dynamic and varied the ocean floor is beneath the waves.

Absolute madness near the pier! โš“ ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐ŸŽฃ

A big salute to Tatay Wilfredo Capule for such a solid micro-jigging sesh in Limay, Bataan waters. Those fish near the pier are no joke. We really felt the raw power of the sea today! ๐Ÿ’ช ๐Ÿ”ฑ

Also, thank you so much Tay Wil for showing our friend Sir Delmer Lacuesta from Tabuk City, Kalinga a legendary experience he won't soon forget. Battling for almost 15 minutes just to land this massive Lapis (Queenfish) was incredible. ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ™Œ

Special thanks as well for giving some leisure time for our respected BFP personnel, Sir Van Ivan Fabian . He definitely deserves the rest and a good time on the water! ๐Ÿš’โš“

From the mountains of Kalinga to the deep blue of Bataan, fishing brings us all together. Another one for the books! ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The Black Marlin Has Been Recorded at 129 km/h โ€” the Fastest Burst Speed of Any Fish Ever Measured. It Strips Line From a Fishing Reel Faster Than a Formula 1 Car Accelerates. It Is Built Like a Missile.

129 kilometres per hour. In water. With no engine.

The Black Marlin โ€” Istiompax indica โ€” is the fastest fish with a confirmed burst speed measurement: approximately 129 km/h (80 mph), recorded from line-stripping rates on fishing reels using calibrated equipment. The methodology โ€” calculating the rate at which a known-diameter reel loses line to a running fish โ€” has been validated as a legitimate speed measurement technique.

For context: a Formula 1 car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 2.5 seconds. A Black Marlin reaches 129 km/h from a standing start in the water. In a medium with 800 times the density of air.

The body plan: a rigid, fusiform torpedo shape. The pectoral fins fold flat against the body during high-speed runs. The bill: a rigid rostrum that reduces drag and may be used to stun prey. The musculature: the largest proportion of swimming muscle relative to body mass of any known billfish.

Unlike the Sailfish (which reaches comparable speeds over short bursts), the Black Marlin maintains high speeds over longer distances โ€” making it arguably the superior open-ocean pursuit predator.

It can weigh over 700 kg. It can reach 129 km/h. It lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific.

Every swordfish, marlin, and billfish in the ocean represents a separate evolutionary refinement of the same high-speed pursuit body plan โ€” convergent evolution toward one function: moving through water as fast as physically possible.

If speed requires as much evolutionary refinement in water as on land โ€” what does the Black Marlin's 129 km/h tell us about the limits of biological engineering?

The latest forecast also raises the possibility that it could intensify into a rare and historically powerful โ€œSuperโ€ (Very Strong) El Niรฑo by end of 2026.

For the Philippines, this developing El Niรฑo could trigger a more intense season by June-July before we shift into drier conditions as early as August or September.

The "peak" effects of this El Niรฑo will likely be from January to June 2027, marked by severe drought and extreme heat, which could trigger widespread water and electricity shortage during the Tag-init Season.
