Bahile Solo Night Trek During Heavy Rain

Prelude:
-July 28, 2018: Got referred by Othoniel “Don don” Calago to Guide a group of 8 21-22 year old volunteers from various countries (Slovenia, Spain, US and Belgium)
-Guided smoothly despite the rain and reached the top despite the relatively late meetup time (8am rather than 4am)
-25% into the decent, I realized my 12inch Bear Grills knife (My choice knife for trimming small branches that obstruct the trail) was missing
-Got sympathy points from the participants, tried act cool about losing my knife (It’s just a knife. I’ve got 20 of them back at my place (It was my only one)), probably didn’t work due to my unmistakably worried expression.
-4 days later, remembered I lost my knife and decided I didn’t want to drop coin for a new one.
-Apparently, I’m the kind of fella that would willingly take on this daunting a task for such meager a reward.

Itinerary: August 1, 2018
12:00pm- Binge watch both Pacific Rim movies (2013 and 2018) while finishing 1/4 caldero of rice and a generous serving of adobo
02:00pm- Collapse into food coma
03:00pm- Scramble to gather gear and decide if I’m really going to do this (I think hiking even the nearby mountains in Palawan by oneself is equivalent to Piloting a Jaeger in Solo combat against a Cat 4 Kaiju. This in concert with inclement weather and the dark can make for an intimidating prospect even for experienced adventureros)
04:00pm- Ride motorcycle (Honda CBR 150. Good bike, sh*tty rider) from Puerto Princesa City proper to Brgy. Salvation (37km) (40-60Km/hr)
05:00pm- Arrive at Brgy. Salvacion, Park Motorcycle at nearby Batangas Lomi store.
05:30pm- Happen to pass by several locals, attempt to breifly explain what I intend to do and deal with the decidedly puzzled expressions as if to say they think I’m joking/crazy.
06:00pm- Reach base of Mt. Bahile and prep gear for impending heavy rain and nightfall telegraphed by the dark clouds and dwindling sunlight
06:30pm- Start to act confident to hide nervousness upon entering thick, dark forested area notorious for barbed rattan vines and spiked stems (Even Slenderman would call it quits after appearing 2.3 time in front of my headlamp’s floodlight (Black Diamond Revolt 350 lumens).
06:45pm- Start seeing what seems like red fireflies (Yeah, I don’t know either, but that’s what I kept seeing.
07:00pm- Arrive at scenic waterfall area, consume majority of Nestle fine, dark chocolate and apreciate the fullness of the numerous streams that would have otherwise been unremarkable
07:05pm- Proceed to navigate up the especially slippery rocks
07:10pm- Arrive at the start of the summit assault section where things get particularly steep and thornier than usual
07:45pm- Arrive at Summit, fail to find my knife, enjoy the view of the City, head back down.
10:00pm- Arrived back at highway where I parked my motorcycle
10:30pm- Got my money’s worth on my near mint Arcteryx Alpha SV Blaze I snagged at a thrift store when heavy rains (The kind that feel like you’re getting hit by pebbles) made me slow down from 50km/hr to 30km/hr.
11:00pm Arrived back home. Tired yet fairly impressed, no longer attached to getting my knife back.

Disclaimers:
-Hiking alone is generally not a good idea (See: 147 hours, Jungle, Into the Wild)
-I don’t think I'm badass for doing this. If I hear of anyone else doing the same thing here, I would be fairly impressed, but I’ve hiked this particular mountain numerous times over the course of 4 years imparting confidence that I’ll be able to navigate it at even the worst of conditions even on my own. The challenge was mainly all in my head.
-The trail was made significantly easier due to other groups starting to frequent this mountain over the last months of 2017, a welcome change from the ubiquitous rattan vines and wild pandan that riddled the path for the hikers for years past.
