ARE YOU TRAINING HARDER… OR JUST REPEATING YOURSELF?
If you’ve ever found yourself adding one more chest press just to make sure you don’t miss any part of your chest, keep reading.
It’s a common mindset. More exercises feel more productive.
We convince ourselves that another exercise will finally hit the muscle from the angle we’ve been missing.
But sometimes, you’re just adding exercise redundancy, where different exercises provide a similar training stimulus without adding much unique benefit.
If your chest workout includes a flat machine chest press, a plate-loaded chest press, and a Smith machine bench press, ask yourself:
Are these truly providing different stimuli, or are they mostly different ways of doing the same job?
Your muscles respond to the stimulus you create, not the name of the exercise.
Once you’ve accumulated enough productive sets, adding another exercise with a similar training stimulus often provides diminishing returns while adding more fatigue.
Before adding another movement, ask yourself:
“What does this exercise provide that my current program doesn’t?”
If it doesn’t provide a meaningfully different stimulus, you may just be adding variety for the sake of variety.
Variety is valuable when it meaningfully changes the stimulus, not simply because the exercise looks different.
This doesn’t mean repeating an exercise is wrong.
If your goal is to accumulate more quality training volume, repeating a movement can be a perfectly valid strategy.
The key is understanding why it’s in your program.
The next time you build a workout, don’t ask how many exercises you can fit.
Ask whether each exercise earns its place.
Because more isn’t always better.
Better exercise selection is.

While waiting in line for food, I overheard someone checking the calories before ordering.
I love seeing more people become aware of what they’re eating. Not because every calorie needs to be tracked, but because awareness is often the first step toward making better decisions.
You don’t have to count calories forever. For many people, it’s simply one tool that can help them better understand their eating habits.
It helps close the gap between what we think we’re eating and what we’re actually eating.
Many people don’t struggle because they don’t care. They struggle because they underestimate how much they’re eating.
Sometimes, all it takes is a little more awareness to start changing that.
Maybe they’ll only track for a week.
Maybe they’ll stop after that.
Either way, if it helps them better understand their eating habits, that’s a win.
Nutrition isn’t about perfection.
It’s about understanding your habits well enough to change them.

One month of training won’t completely transform a senior’s life.
But it can be enough to build momentum.
In the first month, success often looks like:
✅ Feeling more confident with everyday movements.
✅ Standing up from a chair with less effort.
✅ Improving balance and coordination.
✅ Becoming stronger with basic movement patterns.
✅ Feeling more comfortable and confident in the gym.
✅ Building the habit of exercising consistently.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is to help them move better, stay independent, and build the strength to continue doing the things they enjoy for years to come.
Progress isn’t always dramatic, but for many older adults, these changes can make a meaningful difference in their daily lives.

Our job is to get you from point A to point B, but it doesn’t stop there.
It’s the process, structure, and decisions along the way that actually determine the result.
You’re not paying your coach for the hour you spend in the gym.
You’re paying for:
✅ Programming behind the session – each workout is designed with clear direction and purpose
✅ Planning and scheduling – training is structured to fit your lifestyle and consistency
✅ Communication and check-ins – continuous guidance throughout the process
✅ Accountability – support to stay consistent even on low-motivation days
✅ Exercise selection and modifications – movements tailored to your needs, limitations, and goals
✅ Real-time coaching decisions – adjustments made based on performance, fatigue, and readiness
✅ Behavior change support – building habits that last beyond training sessions
✅ Progress tracking – measuring progress instead of guessing
✅ Ongoing adjustments – evolving the plan as your body and goals change
Most of the work happens long before you step onto the gym floor.
The session is just where it gets executed.

Most clients come to me saying, “I want to lose weight.”
But here is the better question. What do you actually want to lose?
Because the scale does not just reflect fat. It reflects fat, muscle, and water.
When weight goes down, it does not automatically mean you are losing fat. Depending on your training, protein intake, and how aggressive your diet is, some of that change can also come from muscle and water.
And that matters.
Because muscle is what helps you stay strong, move well, and keep your results long-term.
This is why two people can lose the same amount of weight but end up with different outcomes.
One loses mostly fat and keeps muscle.
The other loses both fat and muscle.
Same scale result. Different body composition.
And beyond appearance, this difference also affects health, strength, and how sustainable your results are over time.
That is why in coaching, we do not just focus on weight loss.
We focus on fat loss while preserving muscle through resistance training, enough protein, and a controlled calorie deficit.
So instead of only asking,
“How much weight did I lose?”
It’s more useful to ask,
“How much fat did I lose while keeping my muscle?”
Because that tells us what is actually happening inside your body.
The scale is still useful, but it is only one measure.
Weight loss is still a valid outcome. But it is not always the best primary target if the goal is long-term health and body composition.
If your goal is better health, better strength, and a better physique, the focus should not just be weight loss.
The goal is better body composition that you can maintain.
Alongside this, progress is also seen through strength, waist measurements, how clothes fit, and energy levels. These often tell you more about real change than the scale alone.

From sit-to-stand to a 5 kg goblet squat.
Ms. Bel is only in her early weeks of training, and this is a clear example of what the right progression looks like.
For senior clients, the goal isn’t complexity. It’s building capacity from their current ability, improving function, confidence, and long-term independence.
Training is about meeting the client where they are and progressing from there.
As a Senior Fitness Specialist, my focus is helping clients like Ms. Bel build confidence, function, and independence that carries over into everyday movement.

IF YOU THINK GREAT COACHING IS ABOUT HAVING THE PERFECT PROGRAM, IT’S NOT.
The best program will fall short if there is no communication between us.
If I understand what is actually happening on your end, I can make the right adjustments to your training.
If you’re struggling, if an exercise doesn’t feel right, if your schedule changes, or if something is bothering you, tell me.
That also means being honest about what you can realistically follow, not just what looks ideal on paper.
Your feedback gives me the information I need to adjust your training so it matches how your body is actually responding.
Coaching is not about blindly following a program. It’s about making the program work for you in real time.
The better we communicate, the better I can adjust your training, and the more efficient your progress becomes.
The best outcomes don’t come from clients who just follow.
They come from clients who communicate, adjust, and stay engaged in the process.
Coaching only works when there is communication. The more honest and consistent you are with feedback, the more effective your training becomes, and the more consistent your progress will be.
