The Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (PALA) expresses deep concern over the ongoing cutting and earth-balling of mature trees along Quirino Avenue and Roxas Boulevard for the SALEX project.
Mature trees are essential urban infrastructure that provide cooling, air filtration, flood mitigation, biodiversity support, and climate resilience. Their removal raises critical concerns on environmental sustainability and climate-responsive urban development in Metro Manila.
PALA calls for stronger protection of urban trees and the integration of nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure into major infrastructure projects.

On March 5, 2026, the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (PALA) formally turned over archival materials documenting the professional works of the late L.Ar. Idelfonso P. Santos, Jr., National Artist for Architecture, to the UP Asian Institute of Tourism (UP AIT). The turnover was undertaken to ensure the safeguarding, documentation, and long-term preservation of Philippine landscape architectural heritage.
Widely regarded as the Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture, L.Ar. Santos made enduring contributions to the countryโs cultural and tourism landscapes. Among his landmark works are the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Nayong Pilipino, Rizal Park, and the landscape and courtyard of the UP AIT building.
UP AIT is currently pursuing partnerships with the UP College of Architecture and the University Archives to establish a collaborative framework for the joint care, management, and preservation of the I.P. Santos Collection.
This initiative aligns with the vision of the proposed AIT Tourism Heritage Complexโenvisioned as both a physical and institutional space within the university that will serve as a repository of heritage archives, arts, and cultural expression in support of tourism development.
Present during the turnover ceremony were PALA President L.Ar. Holtzjosip Abbu, National Secretary L.Ar. Christel Hannah Go, and members Marco Ortiz and Jose Roman Abad; UP College of Architecture Professor Nappy Navarra; AIT Dean Giovanni Legaspi, Assistant Professor Carmela Ibaรฑez; AIT Head Librarian Ms. Jen Bagares; and Ms. Suzy Santos-Aquino, heir of L.Ar. I.P. Santos.
