The Philippine basketball community is in a state of profound shock and heartbreak. Ateneo de Manila University has officially confirmed the untimely passing of two promising young student-athletes from the Men’s Basketball Team, Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
The tragic loss occurred following a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on Monday afternoon, June 8, 2026.

Divine Adili, 21, was the Blue Eagles' foreign student-athlete who showcased immense potential during UAAP Season 88. Rookie Rene Baterbonia, 19, was a stellar high school standout and a former Palarong Pambansa MVP who had just committed his bright future to the Katipunan-based squad.

In an official statement, the university expressed its deepest grief and extended its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones left behind by the two young men. The university is currently providing and members of the basketball program, while respectfully requesting privacy and space for all those grieving this devastating loss

Rosario vows Ginebra will fight for
PBA Finals title vs TNT

Troy Rosario promised Ginebra fans that the team will do everything it can to win the PBA Commissioner’s Cup championship against TNT.

He said he hopes this Finals ends differently after Ginebra lost to TNT in seven games last conference.

Rosario added that winning a title with Ginebra would be one of the greatest achievements of his PBA career. Despite dealing with injuries, he is determined to play through the pain and help the team capture the championship.

A powerful earthquake struck Southern Mindanao at around 7:37 a.m. on Monday, with General Santos City, Sarangani, and parts of the Davao Region among the areas most affected.

Reports indicate damage to several buildings and establishments, prompting temporary closures in affected areas. A widespread power outage was also reported in General Santos City following the quake. Local authorities have suspended classes and government offices as damage assessments continue.

The earthquake coincided with the first day of classes in many schools across the region. In Matanao, Davao del Sur, a school building reportedly collapsed due to the strong shaking.

Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami alert for several coastal areas in Mindanao, including Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato. Residents in coastal communities were advised to move to safer areas and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Authorities are also urging the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may continue in the coming hours.
