The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have banned and begun recalling all Chinese-made vehicles from military bases and senior officers due to security fears that the cars' sensors and cameras could be used for espionage.
Rationale for the Ban
The decision was prompted by warnings from cybersecurity experts and intelligence agencies who believe that the embedded technology in Chinese EVs can act as "mobile intelligence platforms". Concerns center on the potential for these vehicles to:
Collect sensitive data, including audio, video, geolocation, and even biometric information of the occupants.
Transmit this data to servers in China.
Be remotely controlled or disabled.
Security officials argued that national security is now inseparable from data security and that all connected devices are potential bridges for espionage.
Scope and Implementation
The ban has several key aspects:
Vehicle Recall: The IDF is recalling approximately 700 Chinese-made vehicles, mostly the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro model, which were assigned to senior officers.
Base Access Restrictions: Chinese-made vehicles are generally prohibited from entering military bases, or restricted to designated parking zones far from sensitive installations.
Procurement Halt: Deliveries of new Chinese vehicles, such as the BYD Atto 3 models intended for lieutenants, were suspended after their electronics were checked.
Mitigation Efforts and Responses
To minimize risk, the e-Call system (automatic emergency services communication) was forcibly disabled in some existing vehicles. However, experts believe this is insufficient to address all potential vulnerabilities.
The Chinese embassy in Israel called for fair treatment of Chinese businesses, stating that manufacturers had removed certain connectivity functions from models exported to Israel to address security concerns and that the data servers for other systems are located in Europe.
Israel's actions align with similar security measures taken by the United States and the United Kingdom, which have also banned Chinese technology from sensitive government and military areas.
