Cubing a Binomial (6 + 3)³ from the First Term
Here, children start with the big cube of 6³ and build outward:
🔷 Add three 6×6 squares to each side
🔷 Identify the remaining spaces
🔷 Fill all gaps with squares of 3 (six times)
🔷 Watch the cube expand into (6 + 3)³

This presentation shows the distributive law in three dimensions—without ever naming it.
Montessori math makes algebra visible.

How do you build the cube of a binomial?

Children begin with:
(3 + 5) × (3 + 5) × (3 + 5)
Then they:
🔵Build the first layer by multiplying everything by 3
🔵Bring back the equation
🔵Build the second layer by multiplying everything by 5
🔵Observe the combined layers forming the binomial cube

This lesson teaches:
✅Why (a + b)³ becomes a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³
✅How multiplication distributes in 3D
✅That algebra is physical, not abstract
Montessori children discover the structure of algebra.

“Can a cube skip from 4 to 6?”

Yes — and with Montessori materials, children can see every step.
To build 4³ into 6³, they:
🔶 Add squares of 4
🔶 Fill remaining gaps with squares of 2
🔶 Add the tiny cube of 2³ to complete the corner

Through this, children discover:
✨ How cubes grow layer by layer
✨ Why cube formulas contain multiple terms
✨ How the distributive law works in 3D
✨ The predictable structure of non-successive cubes

Children don’t memorize formulas — they build and understand them.

“What really makes a cube grow?”

Children build the cube of 7 from the cube of 6, then take it apart to examine every part.
They discover:
✨ The large cube (6³)
✨ Three 6×6 squares (6² × 1)
✨ Three edge prisms (1² × 6)
✨ A tiny cube (1³)

From these pieces, the equation appears naturally:
7³ = 6³ + 3(6² × 1) + 3(1² × 6) + 1³

No memorization.
No lecture.
Just hands-on discovery.
Math becomes a story they can touch.

“How does a cube grow?”

Montessori children don’t memorize formulas — they build them.

Using the Cubing Material, the child begins with a cube of 5 and asks:
👉 What do I need to add to turn this into the cube of 6?

They discover visually and sensorially that:
✔ First, add three squares of 5 — one on each exposed face
✔ Then add one more square of 5 on top
✔ But something is still missing…
✔ The remaining gaps are filled exactly with 1×1 red squares
✔ These 1² pieces complete the “growth layer” of the cube

When all pieces are added, the child has built the difference between 5³ and 6³ with their hands.
This single lesson helps children see:

✨ Why cubes grow the way they do
✨ How 6³ contains 5³ plus additional layers
✨ The foundation of the distributive law
✨ Why cubing formulas make sense later in algebra

The beauty is that the child discovers this pattern long before symbolic math.
Montessori cubing = deep understanding through concrete work.

🌿 One set. Many writers.

💡 Did you know? With this configured cursive alphabet in configured box, up to four or five children can work together at once!

Placed upright or at a gentle slant, the box makes every letter visible and easy to reach. For the child in the sensitive period for writing, this material is a true invitation.

Because the letters are organized and fixed, both teachers and children can focus on learning — not on tidying or realigning the set.
