NEGROS ORIENTAL – In line with its commitment to strengthen the capacities of coconut farmers and promote sustainable farming systems, the Agricultural Training Institute in Central Visayas (ATI-Central Visayas), conducted the Training on Coconut-Cacao Farming System from July 29 to 31, 2026, in Negros Oriental.

The activity gathered 32 coconut farmer-beneficiaries from Bindoy, Manhuyod, and Jimalalud, Negros Oriental under the Department of Agriculture–High Value Crops Development Program's (DA-HVCDP) Community-Based Farm Enterprise Development: Farm Rehabilitation and Improvement (Intercropping with Coffee and Cacao) implemented through the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP).

The three-day training was designed to enhance farmers' knowledge and technical skills on integrated coconut-cacao production, supporting the government's initiative to improve farm productivity, diversify income sources, and build resilient farming communities.

The activity forms part of the implementation of Republic Act No. 11524, or the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund (CFITF) Act, which seeks to uplift the lives of coconut farmers through comprehensive development interventions.

The training highlighted the importance of coconut-cacao intercropping as a sustainable farming strategy that maximizes land utilization while providing farmers with additional sources of income.

ATI-Central Visayas emphasized that diversified farming systems have become increasingly important in the face of climate-related challenges, particularly following the decline in crop production in Central Visayas caused by severe weather disturbances.

The initiative also supports the regional target of expanding coconut-cacao intercropping areas under the Philippine Cacao Industry Roadmap and the CFIDP.
