PNSA STATEMENT ON RESPONSIBLE FIREARM OWNERSHIP AND SAFETY

The Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA) joins the nation in mourning the tragic loss of young lives following the recent shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Our deepest sympathies go to the families of those who lost their lives, the injured, their classmates, teachers and the entire school community affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

As an organization committed to the development of Olympic and sports shooting, we believe it is important to make one distinction clear: shooting as a sport is not about violence.

Responsible shooting sports are built on discipline, concentration, precision, respect for rules, safety and, above all, self-control. These are values that every responsible shooter is expected to uphold.

At the same time, this tragedy reminds us of the enormous responsibility that comes with firearm ownership.

The PNSA supports stronger and more effective measures for responsible firearm ownership—including rigorous licensing and eligibility standards, secure storage, prevention of unauthorized access, and continuing accountability of firearm owners.

A license to own a firearm must come with an equally serious responsibility to secure it.

But laws and enforcement alone cannot address the deeper issues surrounding violence in our society.

The family is the fundamental unit of society, and responsibility begins at home. Parents and guardians who keep fi****ms must ensure that they are properly secured and inaccessible to children and other unauthorized persons. More broadly, families must remain engaged in the lives of young people—listening, guiding, teaching empathy, respect, accountability and the consequences of our actions.

Schools, communities, government and society as a whole also have an important role to play. Education must extend beyond academics. We must strengthen social awareness, responsible behavior, conflict resolution and respect for human life, while paying closer attention to the challenges faced by our young people in an increasingly complex digital and social environment.

We should also allow the authorities to complete their investigation without speculation about motives or circumstances that have not yet been established.

What we can do now is reflect on what this tragedy teaches us: preventing violence is a shared responsibility.

The PNSA believes that the values inherent in responsible shooting sports—discipline, safety, self-control, respect and accountability—are precisely the values that our society should continue to strengthen.

We stand ready to work with government agencies, law enforcement, schools, sports organizations and other stakeholders in promoting firearm safety, responsible ownership and stronger safeguards against unauthorized access.

Fi****ms must never become instruments of tragedy. Responsible ownership means responsibility not only to oneself, but to one’s family, one’s community and to society as a whole.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and loved ones of those affected by this terrible tragedy.

A productive meeting with PNSA President and House Chairperson for Youth and Sports Development Committee Cong. Faustino Michael “Mike” Dy III, PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, and House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” G. Dy III to discuss the budget proposal for the planned PNSA Rifle and Pistol Range and Fencing Hall at the PSC facilities in Pasig.

This project aims to provide our athletes with modern, dedicated training facilities and strengthen the development of shooting and fencing in the country.

This morning you set a new National Record with a solid 579 in the Olympic Rifle 3P. What a bright and well-earned moment! This strong result surpasses the Asian Games criteria and marks a wonderful comeback for our Tokyo Olympian, full of resilience and heart on the road to Nagoya.

Perseverance and determination turn challenging stretches into brighter days like this. So happy for you—keep aiming high, keep trusting the work, and keep moving forward!

Philippine Shooters at World Cup Hangzhou 🇵🇭

What a hard-fought World Cup, Hangzhou edition.

Congratulations to Franchette Quiroz for her solid performance with a score of 577 in the Olympic 25m Pistol event and to Lydia Cuyong for achieving a personal best and equalling the National Record , 110/125 in Ladies Olympic Trap — both breaking the criteria for the World Championships.

Shoutout to the rest of the team who stepped up on the world stage (several of whom had already qualified for the Asian Games, World Championships, or both):Michael Angelo Fernandez, Carlo Valdez, Timothy Poblete, Amparo Acuña, and Antonio Joseph Javines.

Recognition also goes to Catherine and Valerie Levanza and Leonardo Gino for achieving their personal bests.

The entire Philippine delegation represented us with grit. This World Cup was humbling for some of us, but lessons were learned and we trust these will propel us forward. There are more targets to shoot and more hard training ahead as we prepare for the Asian Games in Nagoya.

Our athletes are heading to China ready to compete on the world stage.

Olympic Pistol –SEA Games team bronze medalists Michael Angelo Fernandez, Carlo Deniel Valdez (recent Thai Open silver medalist), Timothy John Poblete, and National Champion Franchette Shayne Quiroz, with Coach Azizjon Mukhamedrakhimov.

Olympic Rifle –Amparo Teresa Acuña, fresh off breaking her personal and national record. Accompanied by Coach Julius Valdez .

Olympic Shotgun (Trap) –Olympian Jethro Dionisio (recent SEASA bronze medalist) and Junior Champion Antonio Joseph Javines, coming in hot from their World Cup Lonato stint.

Olympic Ladies Trap –National Champion Lydia Cuyong and national record holder Janice Navato.

Also representing –Teddy Javines, Leonardo Gino Jr., Valerie Levanza, and 2026 SEASA silver medalist Catherine Levanza.

Che bella giornata qui a Lonato!🇮🇹

Proud of our Olympic s***t duo — SEAGames silver medalist Enrique Leandro Enriquez and London Olympian Paul Brian Rosario! 🇵🇭🎯

Both shot an impressive 117/125 individually at the World Cup in Lonato — an edition that gathered 600+ shooters from 83 countries. Enrique had already secured qualification earlier, and Brian’s performance here earned him his rightful spot by surpassing the Asian Games and World Championships criteria in the most prestigious and most attended event of shotgun shooting.

In the sweltering heat, across three gruelling days and long waits between rounds, our boys held up and carried the flag proudly. Huge respect to World #1 Vincent Hancock (USA) for taking the title and setting a new world record with a perfect 36/36 in the Final — today we celebrate Enrique and Brian’s grit and achievement. Onward and upward!
