Official Statement on the Mismanagement of Athlete Selection for the 35th National Games
For the last two decades, we have proudly served as the pioneers of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Gilgit-Baltistan, working tirelessly to promote combat sports across the region. Through continuous effort, personal sacrifice, and community-driven initiatives, we have built a strong foundation for athletes who have gone on to make Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan proud at both national and international levels.
Over the years, our fighters have represented Pakistan in global arenas with exceptional professionalism and achievement. Internationally recognized names such as Anita Karim, Uloomi Karim, Usman Wazeer, and Haider Farman stand as living proof of the immense talent that exists in Gilgit-Baltistan when athletes are given proper training, mentorship, and opportunities. These athletes—and many others trained in our system—have brought home championships, medals, and global recognition for the region.
It is therefore with deep disappointment and concern that we address the recent actions of the Gilgit-Baltistan Government regarding the selection of athletes for the 35th National Games. Without consultation with relevant sports bodies, coaches, or professional trainers, the authorities have chosen participants who have no experience whatsoever in the sports they are being sent to compete in. It is alarming to note that ordinary Taekwondo players—with no background in boxing, wrestling, or Jiu-Jitsu—have been handpicked to represent Gilgit-Baltistan in these disciplines.
This decision was made without conducting fair trials, without assessing merit, and without following any recognized selection criteria. Reports indicate that individuals were “picked and chosen” arbitrarily, and potentially for monetary or political reasons rather than sporting merit. Such actions not only compromise the integrity of competitive sports, but also pose serious safety risks to the athletes themselves. Combat sports require highly specialized training, and sending untrained individuals into these high-risk categories is irresponsible, unethical, and dangerous.
For years, Zia Ud Din and the Mountain Warriors team have worked relentlessly—often investing from their own pockets—to train, discipline, and prepare a pool of talented fighters who are fully capable of competing at the national level. Their contributions to the sports community of Gilgit-Baltistan are undeniable. To completely ignore their work and overlook deserving, trained athletes is not just unjust—it is an injustice to the athletes, to the sport, and to the entire region.
We firmly believe that those responsible for these negligent decisions must be held accountable. This situation deserves immediate attention from higher authorities, the media, and all stakeholders in Pakistan’s sports ecosystem. We demand the following:
1. An independent inquiry into the selection process for the 35th National Games.
2. Immediate suspension of the flawed selections made without merit.
3. Implementation of transparent, merit-based trials for all combat sports categories.
4. Recognition and involvement of qualified coaches and organizations, including Mountain Warriors, in future decision-making.
5. Measures to prevent such mismanagement from occurring again in the future.
For the safety of the athletes, the dignity of sports, and the reputation of Gilgit-Baltistan, corrective action is not only necessary—it is urgent.
We stand committed to the development of sports in the region and will continue raising our voice until justice, transparency, and professionalism are restored.
