Asia's first purpose-built Australian rules football ground is being developed in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

The development came about when Pakistan’s Interior Minister Moshin Naqvi stumbled across an AFL training camp while visiting an infrastructure project in the capital, Islamabad last year.

AFL Pakistan president Sardar Tariq Mehmood Khan said it was the minister’s first encounter with the sport.

He spoke with players and coaches and “was visibly impressed with the passion and commitment of young Pakistani athletes embracing a new and unfamiliar sport’’, Khan said.

An undeveloped site in the capital was offered to AFL Pakistan in October and work began soon after to get it up to scratch. It is due to open in March this year.

Khan said the league had been using cricket and soccer club grounds for training and games. “However, the long-term objective has always been to secure dedicated fields that Australian football in Pakistan could truly call home,’’ he said.

Australian football has been played in Pakistan since around 2014. The sport is growing quickly, with six clubs fielding teams in men's and women's competitions. The men’s national team put in a strong performance in the 2024 Asia Cup, winning two games and losing to eventual winners Japan by just 10 points.
