Our Story
The history of The World Group dates back to 1912, when the six sons of the Trunkwala Family established a trunk-manufacturing company under the leadership of Late Haji Abubakar Trunkwala. At the time, the company operated under the name of Haji Abubakar Haji Ilyas & Sons at the Chakiwara Site Area, Karachi and sold products all over the Indo-Pak subcontinent.
The Trunkwala family always had a passion to invest in Real Estate and with this in mind, built godowns for rental purposes. These godowns later converted into housing colonies that still exist today and are popularly known as Usmanabad, Ismailabad and Mohammadabad (named after the sons of Late Haji Abu Bakr Trunkwala).
Not long after, a sugar godown at Napier Road acquired from Haji Sir Abdullah Haroon became a Sales and Display outlet for iron trunks. The product line was soon expanded to include leather suitcases, bags and traveling equipment sold under the name of Sind Leather Works. Its display outlets were opened in Saddar, Bunder Road and Old Karachi.
In 1931 Late Haji Abdul Rahim Trunkwala took over and extended the borders through import and sale of used clothing from USA and Europe. In 1973, Mr. Mehmood Trunkwala carried the torch and founded International Motors in Karachi with offices in Nagoya, Tokyo, Kobe and Toyota City in Japan. In 1976 Mr. Mehmood Trunkwala inaugurated two more outlets - Universal Motors at Tariq Road and Crescent Cars at Sabzi Mandi.
In 1979
International Motors started to import Toyota Pickups, Jeeps, 4x2s, 4x4s, Hiace, Land Cruiser II and other SUVs such as the Starlets. After great success with Toyota, the Group established a showroom and 3S dealership (Sales, Spares and Service) at Shahrah-e-Faisal.
1985-1986
saw a historical collaboration with Japanese giants NISSAN for their sole distribution. This was quickly followed by a deal with Daihatsu and World Group became their largest distributor of 800 CC cars. Also, in 1985, the Group started trading pulses, spices and maizes, importing Glucose and saline solutions, and hydrochloride allied chemicals. Trading and import took place under the banner of "World Corp" and "World Enterprise".
1991 to 1994
Grabbing more opportunities, The Group invested in spinning mills towards the end of 1989. This unit of 17200 spindles was located at the Manga Mandi in Raiwind. From 1991 to 1994, the government started the Yellow Cab Scheme. The Group had managed to obtain the largest number of vehicles from Daihatsu and Mazda. In 1996, the automobile industry was revolutionized with local assembly of Nissan. The Asia Regional Office successfully signed a deal with Ssangyong (Korea) for imports of 4x4 Jeeps and seven-seater vans.
In 1998
the Group expanded to German markets and signed up with Mercedes and BMW simultaneously to advertise their products along with Mitsubishi, ISUZU, Nissan Diesel and Ursus.
In 2005
During early 2000s, World Corp welcomed a deal with IFFCO for trading confectionery items by the name of Alfa and Tiffany. In 2005, Rexton and Stavic were also launched.
Today, this legacy has continued over 104 years and is called World Group. The Group comprises of over 12 operating companies in more than seven diverse business sectors including Automobiles, Financial Investments and Consultancy, Education, Manufacturing Units, International and Local Trading, Golf and Country Clubs, Real Estate Developments, Real Estate Holdings and Shareholdings in other big ventures.
From the humble beginnings of 400 employees, World Group is now a diverse conglomerate of 12 subsidiaries in seven business sectors: Real Estate Development and Holdings, International and Local Trading, Automobiles, Golf and Country Clubs, Manufacturing Units, Education, PR & Event Management and Financial Investments and Consultancy.
