What is LOTO ?

LOTO means Lock Out Tag Out.

It is a safety procedure used to make sure that machines or equipment are completely shut down and cannot start accidentally during maintenance or repair work.

Lock Out

A lock is placed on the energy source (switch, valve, breaker, etc.) to prevent operation.

Tag Out

A warning tag is attached showing:

* Name of worker
* Date
* Warning not to operate the equipment

Purpose of LOTO

To protect workers from:

* Electric shock
* Unexpected machine startup
* Release of pressure, gas, steam, or energy

Example

Before repairing a motor:

* Switch off power
* Lock the breaker
* Put warning tag
* Then start maintenance safely

In simple words:
LOTO is a system to isolate hazardous energy before work starts.

Work Permit System
A work permit system is a written safety process. Before starting work, you must get official permission on paper. It checks if the job is safe to do, what hazards are there, and what safety steps are needed.

What is Lifting?

Examples:
Using a ladder: Climbing up to change a lightbulb or paint a wall.

Working on a roof: Repairing shingles or cleaning out gutters.

Using a scaffold: Standing on a raised metal platform to work on the side of a building.

What is Hazard?
Answer: A hazard is a potential source of harm or an adverse health effect. It can be a substance, an object, a situation, or an event. Simply, anything that can cause injury or damage is a hazard.

Types of Hazards
Chemical: Harm from substances like acids, cleaners, or gases.
Physical: Danger from energy like noise, electricity, heat, or falls.
Biological: Illness from living things like bacteria, viruses, or mold.
Ergonomic: Strain from poor posture, heavy lifting, or repetitive tasks.
Psychosocial: Mental stress from factors like bullying or heavy workloads.
