Chat GPT 4 has landed but wait .... What is Chat GPT-4?

Microsoft Corp-backed startup OpenAI began the rollout of GPT-4, a powerful arttificial intellignece model that succeeds the technology behind the wildly popoular ChatGPT.
GPT-4 is "multimodal", which means it can generate content from both image and text prompts.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GPT-4 AND GPT-3.5?
GPT-3.5 takes only text prompts, whereas the latest version of the large language model can also use images as inputs to recognize objects in a picture and analyze them. GPT-3.5 is limited to about 3,000-word responses, while GPT-4 can generate responses of more than 25,000 words.
GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content than its predecessor and scores 40% higher on certain tests of factuality. It will also let developers decide their AI's style of tone and verbosity.
For example, GPT-4 can assume a Socratic style of conversation and respond to questions with questions. The previous iteration of the technology had a fixed tone and style. Soon ChatGPT users will have the option to change the chatbot's tone and style of responses, OpenAI said.

WHAT ARE THE CAPABILITIES OF GPT-4?
The latest version has outperformed its predecessor in the U.S. bar exam and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). GPT-4 can also help individuals calculate their taxes, a demonstration by Greg Brockan, OpenAI's president, showed.
The demo showed it could take photo of a hand-drawn mock-up for a simple website and create a real one. Be My Eyes, an app that caters to visually impaired people, will provide virtual volunteer tool powered by GPT-4 on its app.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF GPT-4?
According to OpenAI, GPT-4 has similar limitations as its prior versions and is "less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios". Inaccurate responses known as "hallucinations" have been a challenge for many AI programs, including GPT-4.
OpenAI said GPT-4 can rival human propagandists in many domains, especially when teamed up with a human editor. It cited an example where GPT-4 came up with suggestions that seemed plausible, when it was asked about how to get two parties to disagree with each other.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said GPT-4 was "most capable and aligned" with human values and intent, though "it is still flawed." GPT-4 generally lacks knowledge of events that occurred after September 2021, when the vast majority of its data was cut off. It also does not learn from experience.

WHO HAS ACCESS TO GPT-4?
While GPT-4 can process both text and image inputs, only the text-input feature will be available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and software developers, with a waitlist, while the image-input ability is not publicly available yet. The subscription plan, which offers faster response time and priority access to new features and improvements, was launched in February and costs $20 per month. GPT-4 powers Microsoft's Bing AI chatbot and some features on language learning platform Duolingo's subscription tier.

"IT'S NOT INCONCEIVABLE."

Geoffrey Hinton, a British computer scientist, is best known as the "godfather of artificial intelligence." His seminal work on neural networks broke the mold by mimicking the processes of human cognition, and went on to form the foundation of machine learning models today.

And now, in a lengthy interview with CBS News, Hinton shared his thoughts on the current state of AI, which he fashions to be in a "pivotal moment," with the advent of artificial general intelligence (AGI) looming closer than we'd think.

"Until quite recently, I thought it was going to be like 20 to 50 years before we have general purpose AI," Hinton said. "And now I think it may be 20 years or less."

AGI is the term that describes a potential AI that could exhibit human or superhuman levels of intelligence. Rather than being overtly specialized, an AGI would be capable of learning and thinking on its own to solve a vast array of problems.

For now, omens of AGI are often invoked to drum up the capabilities of current models. But regardless of the industry bluster hailing its arrival or how long it might really be before AGI dawns on us, Hinton says we should be carefully considering its consequences now — which may include the minor issue of it trying to wipe out humanity.

"It's not inconceivable, that's all I'll say," Hinton told CBS.

The Big Picture
Still, Hinton maintains that the real issue on the horizon is how AI technology that we already have — AGI or not — could be monopolized by power-hungry governments and corporations (see: the former non-profit and now for-profit OpenAI).

"I think it's very reasonable for people to be worrying about these issues now, even though it's not going to happen in the next year or two," Hinton said in the interview. "People should be thinking about those issues."

Luckily, by Hinton's outlook, humanity still has a little bit of breathing room before things get completely out of hand, since current publicly available models are mercifully stupid.

"We're at this transition point now where ChatGPT is this kind of idiot savant, and it also doesn't really understand about truth, " Hinton told CBS, because it's trying to reconcile the differing and opposing opinions in its training data. "It's very different from a person who tries to have a consistent worldview."

But Hinton predicts that "we're going to move towards systems that can understand different world views" — which is spooky, because it inevitably means whoever is wielding the AI could use it push a worldview of their own.

"You don't want some big for-profit company deciding what's true," Hinton warned.
