Becoming a confident Mafia player is easier than it seems. These 3 skills will get you far: ability to count up to three, and the nerves to stand your ground while the whole table points a finger at you.

When someone says they are a sheriff and you’re a „checked black”, they are 100% black for you. Do not say „I think they are black”, say „I know for a fact they are black”. Show no doubt in that matter, otherwise the other citizens will eliminate you.

Same goes for a situation where you say you’re a sheriff, and another person says they are a sheriff from the opposite team. This person is 100% black for you.

Tip for newbies: if you’re a mafia, and one one of your mafia team members is saying out loud, in plain daylight, in the middle of the game „Shoot 3!” - just do as they said and shoot 3. It’s not a bluff, it’s not a bait :) They take full responsibility for this order.

Why are they doing this?

- Maybe they found a sheriff, and they are sacrificing the secrecy of their own role for the sake of making sure to shoot the Sheriff.

- Maybe they have calculated that from this moment it’s enough to just shoot correctly, and mafia will instantly win, as there will be 50/50 proportion of mafia vs. citizens left at the table.

To win as a mafia, you do not need to convince all citizens at the table. All you need is one hand. One red player who believes you is enough.

Focus on using that one citizen, keep them alive and lead them to vote with you.

Tip for the very beginners: as a Black player, you don’t always have to play together with your other mafia. Pretending you’re not together is a perfectly valid strategy, try it out! Feel free to attack them, nominate them, and if the majority is already voting them - vote them too. If one of you goes down, the other one will have a better chance to survive then.

At the round of 4 players, should you vote out just 1 player or should you split and remove 2 players?

✅ Always, always remove 2 players at the round of 4.

💹 If only 1 player is removed at the round of 4, this is the end of the game, because guess what? If the removed player was a mafia, city wins. If the removed player was a citizen, mafia shoots at night and instantly wins.

💹 So, if only 1 player is removed, the probability of winning for the city is 25%. If 2 players are removed, the probability of winning is twice as much: 50%.

⚠️ „But what if mafia breaks the split?” Take a moment to imagine how mafia would do it. If mafia is in the split, mafia can only break it into themselves. If mafia is outside of the split, well then mafia won, but not because of the split: because of city’s poor choices.

❌ So, when you’re already splitting 2 at the round of 4, never ever ever ever try to „save” the broken split if someone breaks it: if mafia breaks it they are breaking it into themselves. If you try to save it, you’ll end up breaking it.

‼️ For the love of God, when the moderator finally asks „Who votes for both players to leave the table?”, vote in favor of both leaving, even if you are red and being in the split yourself. If you don’t, the night will fall, mafia will shoot someone, and you’ll enter the round of 3, with a 33% probability of winning, instead of 50% probability that city had before.

Ever tried signaling whom to shoot via fingers? E.g. a ring on 2nd finger from the left means „shooting player number 2”.

Fingers dynamics can take many forms:
- ring wearing
- nail biting
- touching hands / face / something on the table

✅ Very convenient to make a shooting signal at the end of the round.

❌ Cannot use it when someone on the team has very poor vision, or your seats are located in such way that you hardly see each other.

What if you get so stressed as a mafia that you can’t think straight?

The job of black players is to confuse the city. When feeling very scared and insecure, try some of the following:

➕ Attack your fellow black team members.

➕ Pretend that you are “together” with some red player: imitate looking in their direction “searching” for clues on the order of shootings.

➕ Say you heard someone (a red player) at night.

➕ At the mafia arrangement meeting, plan the self-murder of yourself: this way you’ll leave the game faster :)

➕ Have fun! Black card is your opportunity to plant some chaos at the table and be proud of that later :)

When is the “deadline” for opening as a false sheriff?

Simple recommendation is the following: a mafia team has 2️⃣ nights to kill the sheriff. If after 2 nights the real sheriff is still alive, the mafia should open with a false sheriff version, otherwise it’s most probably the loss of the black team.

As a Don, you have 3 tries to find the sheriff:

👉 You order the murder of someone on the first night.

👉 You check another player on the first night.

👉 You order the murder of someone else on the second night.

After the steps above are done, in the second night you check the player who you have just killed:

😇 If this is a sheriff, your job as a Don is done, and you don’t necessarily have to open as a false sheriff.

😈 If this is not a sheriff, the mafia should immediately proceed with the opening of a false sheriff.

P.S. The above is a general simple recommendation. There are of course exceptions, but statistically this will serve you well.

Which checks to give as a false sheriff?

✅ Give your mafia team member as red (this is the safest and the easiest check to come up with)

✅ Give a random citizen as black

✅ Give the dead citizen as red (do it only if you checked them and they are not a sheriff, or you found a sheriff and it’s not them)

✅ Give an alive citizen as red (same here, only if you know they are 100% not a sheriff)

❌ Never, ever, ever give an unchecked citizen as red. If you don’t know who the sheriff is, this might actually be the real sheriff. If you give a real sheriff as your red check, your version is dead.

If you are a regular mafia (not a Don) and you are opening as a false sheriff, that leaves you with only 2 options: give your mafia as red, or give a random citizen as black.

What about giving your mafia team member as black? The purpose would be to cause confusion in table maths. Risky move, use it only when you have a good feeling of the table and decent mafia maths skills. Not recommended for beginners, especially if there were already misfires at current game: black check of your own black player can lead the table to mathematical victory of the city :)

A common mistake of inexperienced sheriff is trying to win the game on their own.

They think their magnificent checks are all it takes to lead the city to victory. Well it’s not enough.

On the second day (when there are 9 players), open yourself to someone who can cover up for you:

- If you have a red check, it’s very important to reveal yourself to them.

- If you have a black check, open to someone who attacked that player, or asked to check him. Most probably, this player is red.

- Open to the first killed player who can leave a legacy mentioning that you are red, and even announcing your check without revealing your identity.

- If you didn’t manage to open to anyone, at least say that you are a red check, or you saw a sheriff’s opening to someone else, or a sheriff opened to you with a black check. Someone might cooperate and cover for you after this move, or at least the mafia will be confused about where the real sheriff is.

How to open discreetly without anyone noticing?
- blinking with one eye
- hitting with a foot under the table
- touching with hand under the table

- by the number of hits under the table,
- or putting as many fingers onto the mask or onto the table,
- or waving your head at the check.
