Cameron McEvoy breaks a 16-year-old world record in the 50m freestyle 🏊♂️
20/03/2026
Cameron McEvoy has rewritten sprint swimming history.
The Australian Olympic champion clocked 20.88 in the men’s 50m freestyle at the China Swimming Open, breaking Cesar Cielo’s long-standing world record of 20.91 from 2009.
The mark, set during the super-suit era, had stood untouched for over 16 years. McEvoy not only surpassed it, but did so with a dominant win, finishing well ahead of the field.
With this swim, he adds the world record to a résumé that already includes Olympic and world titles, confirming his place at the very top of sprint swimming.
