Diva's story is one of persistence. We spent a year trying to get her retired from the track, but her owner resisted and chose to breed her instead leaving her in an unpredictable situation. Thankfully, an incredible person found her, stepped in when she needed it most, and called us to help. Today she's safe with us, and now she's in the running to be crowned Miss Mareworthy.

This competition means the world to us. Mareworthy Charities was born out of the story of Worthy of Wings a mare Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare rescued and placed a few years ago with Kyle Rothfus, who was so moved by her that he founded Mareworthy in her honor. That connection is why we support everything Mareworthy does, and why we're so proud to have Diva in the running.

Diva Chick (Diva) | Mareworthy Match Meet Diva Chick, a 12-year-old Thoroughbred mare available in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Esta iniciativa puede ser un paso positivo para sacar a los caballos de las carreteras y proteger tanto a los animales como a la ciudadanía. Sin embargo, como organización dedicada al rescate y bienestar equino, nos surgen algunas preguntas importantes. ¿Quién estará a cargo del manejo y bienestar de estos caballos y qué preparación profesional tiene esa persona en manejo, cuidado y bienestar equino? ¿Cada caballo será evaluado por un veterinario antes de ser dado en adopción? ¿Se verificará su estado de salud, vacunas, desparasitación, cascos y necesidades particulares? ¿Cómo se evaluarán los hogares adoptantes y qué medidas existen para asegurar que estos caballos no vuelvan a ser abandonados?

También consideramos fundamental que todos estos caballos sean identificados permanentemente mediante microchip antes de ser entregados en adopción. El microchip permite establecer una identificación y trazabilidad permanente del animal y ayuda a responsabilizar a sus propietarios a lo largo de toda la vida del caballo. Esta es precisamente una medida que CTA ha estado presentando durante los últimos tres años ante el Departamento de Agricultura y el Colegio de Médicos Veterinarios de Puerto Rico como una de las mejores herramientas para combatir el abandono y mejorar la trazabilidad de los equinos en Puerto Rico.

El bienestar de estos animales debe continuar mucho después de sacarlos de la carretera. Nos gustaría conocer el protocolo completo y, si es necesario, ofrecer nuestra experiencia y colaboración para ayudar a asegurar que cada caballo sea evaluado, identificado y colocado en un hogar verdaderamente preparado para sus necesidades. Nuestro objetivo no es criticar, sino trabajar juntos para que esta iniciativa sea realmente una solución a largo plazo para estos caballos.

En el Municipio Autónomo de Vega Baja reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con el bienestar animal y la seguridad de todos en las vías públicas. A través de la Orden Ejecutiva Núm. 5 (Serie 2026-2027), creamos la iniciativa "Adopta un Caballo".

¿Cómo funciona la ordenanza?

📌 Para los propietarios de equinos:

-Se estarán recogiendo equinos realengos o abandonados en Vega Baja.

-Todo dueño tiene un término de 30 DÍAS para reclamar a su animal y presentar evidencia de propiedad.

-Evita reincidir: Si un caballo recuperado vuelve a encontrarse suelto, se procederá con el recogido inmediato sin más oportunidades.

A partir de octubre de 2026, estaremos anunciando a través de nuestras páginas oficiales las fechas, detalles y el procedimiento para la adopción responsable de los ejemplares no reclamados.

Worthy of Wings 🪽 the mare that started it all Mareworthy

We are obviously excited for every mare competing for the title of Miss Mareworthy 2026, but before voting begins, we owe a special shout-out to three contestants who are also Mareworthy graduates: Run Binky Run, Mill Valley Girl, and Egoli.

Run Binky Run, better known to us as Binky, became part of Kyle and Sean’s story before Mareworthy even existed. She was the first horse they brought home from Puerto Rico thanks to Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc., and without Binky, it is entirely possible that Worthy of Wings would never have found her way to them. Worthy ultimately became the inspiration and namesake for Mareworthy, which means Binky helped set this entire journey in motion.

Mill Valley Girl, or Millie, came through Mareworthy as a retiring broodmare whose responsible and caring owners wanted to ensure that her next chapter was just as thoughtfully planned as her first. Through our direct-placement program, Millie found a wonderful new home where she has become a show horse and continues to excel.

Then there is Egoli, whom many of you may remember from the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover. After spending only a short time at our farm before being adopted, Egoli absolutely cleaned up in the Makeover’s broodmare barrel division. She has since continued her success in barrels, earning T.I.P. championships and proving just how much talent a retired broodmare can carry into her next career.

We are incredibly grateful to the adopters who continue to love these mares, share their updates with us, and chose to enter them in the inaugural Miss Mareworthy Pageant. Seeing Binky, Millie, and Egoli among this remarkable group of contestants is especially meaningful.

And what a field they have joined.

The inaugural Miss Mareworthy Pageant includes 109 eligible Thoroughbred mares ranging from 4 to 31 years old. Their average age is just over 13.

Among the 107 contestants with available Equineline reports:

• 93 raced, while 14 were listed as nonstarters
• They earned more than $10.8 million during their own racing careers
• 52 have been bred, while 55 had never been bred as of their report dates
• They have produced 177 registered foals
• 120 of those foals became starters
• 85 became winners
• Their progeny have earned more than $11 million
• Together, the mares and their offspring have earned more than $21.8 million
• They represent 100 different sires and were foaled across 22 states and Canadian provinces

This field includes Kentucky Oaks winner Lemons Forever, Breeders’ Cup champions Goodnight Olive and Caravel, and three Breeders’ Cup victories between them. Goodnight Olive is the field’s leading racehorse by earnings, with more than $2.19 million, followed by Caravel with more than $1.98 million.

Goldie’s Sis leads the field with 11 registered foals. Celtic Sunshine produced the most winners, with all eight of her registered foals becoming starters and winners. Lemons Forever leads by progeny earnings, with her offspring earning more than $4.5 million, including champion and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Forever Unbridled.

Some of these mares became champions. Some produced champions. Some found success in entirely new careers. Others are beloved simply because of who they are and what they mean to the people fortunate enough to know them.

That is exactly what Miss Mareworthy is intended to celebrate.
