An important advice from our mascot Picotazo!

Back in 2009, I made a comeback to BJJ after spending 10 years without officially training under an association or team. When I decided to return to training, I was still a blue belt, and Master Rilion Gracie gave me his blessing to continue sharing his style here on the island.

I grew up between New York City and the countryside of Juncos, Puerto Rico. I was always crazy about roosters, especially the ones that loved to fight. 😂

When I opened Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Puerto Rico, that little chick you see in the photo became the inspiration for making the fighting rooster our official mascot.

From a very young age, he would square up and challenge anything that crossed his path. I remember saying, “Ufff, when this guy grows up, he’s going to be a problem for every rooster around here.”, and he was.

Once he matured, no rooster dared get near his hens. More than once I had to pick up a dead rooster from the yard. Sad, yes, but that’s the animal world. You protect your family.

Years later, I met a friend from Brazil who came to Puerto Rico for a while. He was an artist, and he was the one who created the rooster and chick drawings many of you have seen in our images throughout the years.

Yesterday, I decided to upload a photo of my rooster to ChatGPT, and it created the character you see now. When I looked at it, I didn’t just see a drawing. I saw all the years that have passed since I began my journey as an instructor.

There have been good years and difficult years. Victories, defeats, joys, and sacrifices.

But there’s one thing I’ve always admired about fighting roosters; they never quit, they keep moving forward and they fight until the very end.

So, as long as God gives me health and strength, you’ll have this rooster around for a long time.
