Continuing its efforts to preserve the holdings of the Great Omari Mosque Library, the Eyes on Heritage Foundation continues to carry out comprehensive maintenance and restoration work on the library’s furniture and wooden cabinets. These efforts contribute to protecting the collections and rare books from environmental factors and deterioration.
The work also includes upgrading the library’s infrastructure and technical facilities to ensure a preservation environment that meets professional standards and facilitates access for researchers and scholars to the wealth of knowledge housed within the library’s historic walls.
These activities form part of the first phase of the Urgent Rescue Project for the Great Omari Mosque Library. The project is implemented with the generous support of the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund, under the supervision of Heritage for Peace, and in cooperation with the Department of Islamic Heritage at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

In Gaza, rescue extends beyond people and buildings—it also reaches memory.
Inside the library of the Great Omari Mosque, ongoing efforts are dedicated to preserving books and manuscripts that survived the destruction. Every volume that is cleaned, restored, and carefully preserved represents a part of our history and bears witness to a civilization determined to endure.
These are more than books on shelves. They are pages that have preserved knowledge, carried the stories of generations, and continue to remind us that culture and memory can outlive destruction.

في إطار مشروع الإنقاذ العاجل لمكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير، نظّمت مؤسسة عيون على التراث مسارًا ثقافيًا بمشاركة نخبة من الفنانين الشباب، بهدف تعريفهم بأبرز المعالم التاريخية والأثرية في مدينة غزة، واستحضار ما تمثله من ذاكرة حضارية وثقافية.
وشمل المسار زيارة الجامع العمري الكبير ومكتبته التاريخية، وسوق القيسارية إلى جانب قبة دار السعادة وقصر الباشا، وكنيسة العائلة المقدسة، وحمام السمرة، والعديد من البيوت الأثرية، إضافة إلى التجول في أزقة سوق الزاوية، حيث اطّلع المشاركون على القيمة التاريخية لهذه المواقع، وما تعرضت له من أضرار طالت الإرث الثقافي الفلسطيني.
ويأتي هذا المسار ضمن أنشطة مشروع الإنقاذ العاجل لمكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير؛ تمهيداً لإقامة معرض فنيّ تستلهم أعماله وإرثها الثقافي، يهدف هذا المعرض إلى دعم جهود الحفاظ على الذاكرة التاريخية لمدينة غزة، والتأكيد على أن الثقافة والفن هما البنية الأساسية للتنمية الإنسانية والاجتماعية، والمحرّك الأول لاستنهاض الشعب والحفاظ على هويتها الأصيلة.
As part of the Emergency Rescue Project for the Library of the Great Omari Mosque, Eyes on Heritage Foundation organized a cultural tour for a group of young Palestinian artists.
The goal was to reconnect them with Gaza City’s most significant historical and archaeological landmarks, and to remind them of the deep cultural memory these places hold.

The tour included visits to the Great Omari Mosque and its historic library, Al-Qaysariya Market, Al-Saada Dome, Pasha’s Palace, the Holy Family Church, Al-Samra Bath, and several heritage houses. The group also walked through the alleys of Al-Zawiya Market.
There, the artists learned about the historical value of each site, and witnessed firsthand the damage inflicted on Palestine’s cultural heritage.

This tour is part of the broader Emergency Rescue Project for the Omari Mosque Library, and it sets the stage for an upcoming art exhibition.
The exhibition will draw inspiration from these sites and their legacy. Its purpose is to support efforts to preserve Gaza’s historical memory, and to highlight a simple truth:
Culture and art are the foundation of human and social development. They are what revive a people’s spirit and protect their authentic identity.

Marking the launch of the second phase of the urgent rescue project for the Great Omari Mosque Library, the 'Eyes on Heritage' Foundation continues its efforts to safeguard Palestinian historical memory. The foundation announced the start of phase two, which includes an initial damage and risk assessment for collections and libraries during crises and wars, as well as sorting and cleaning the library’s holdings, and creating a comprehensive database for the books and collections. This comes within an integrated plan aimed at protecting them from environmental and external factors and preserving what remains of this precious cultural and historical legacy, in preparation for restoring the library and reopening it to researchers, scholars, and the general public.
This phase falls within the foundation’s policy and ongoing efforts to preserve Palestinian , representing a pivotal step toward rescuing Gaza’s written memory and safeguarding its documentary heritage as a witness to the city’s history and civilization, and an authentic legacy for future generations.

عقدت مؤسسة عيون على التراث في حفظ وصون التراث الثقافي الفلسطيني بالتعاون مع مؤسسة الرئاسة التركية، محاضرة بعنوان: "مخطوطات غزة: ذاكرة مدينة بين التدمير والإبادة وجهود الإنقاذ"، وقد قدّم المحاضرة الدكتور/ عبد اللطيف أبو هاشم، مدير مؤسسة عيون على التراث، ومدير دائرة المخطوطات والآثار سابقاً، والباحث في معهد إريمام، حيث استعرض الواقع التاريخي والتراثي لمدينة غزة، مسلطًا الضوء على مكانتها العلمية والحضارية، وأهمية مخطوطاتها التي تمثل جزءاً أصيلًا من الذاكرة الثقافية الفلسطينية، إلى جانب التحديات التي تواجه هذا الإرث في ظل ما تتعرض له المؤسسات التراثية من تدمير خلال الحرب.
وتناول الدكتور أبو هاشم المكانة التاريخية والعلمية لمدينة غزة، مؤكدًا أنها من أقدم مدن العالم، إذ يعود توثيقها في السجلات التاريخية إلى نحو 1500 عام قبل الميلاد، كما أوضح أن غزة لم تكن عبر تاريخها مجرد ساحة للصراعات، بل حاضرة علمية وحضارية، أسهمت في صناعة المعرفة واحتضان العلماء، وارتبطت بأعلام بارزين، منهم هاشم بن عبد مناف والإمام الشافعي، وأسهمت في تخريج أجيال من العلماء والفقهاء.
كما استعرض الدكتور أبو هاشم القيمة العلمية والتاريخية للمخطوطات، مؤكدًا أنها تمثل ذاكرة غزة الحضارية بما تختزنه من إرث معرفي ووثائقي في شتى العلوم، وأوضح أن مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير شكّلت القيمة الأبرز لهذا التراث، باحتضانها مئات المخطوطات وآلاف الوثائق والوقفيات النادرة. كما سلّط الضوء على عدد من أبرز المخطوطات الفريدة والنادرة ، منها ديوان ابن زقاعة الغزي، والإسعاف في أحكام الأوقاف، ومعارج الأنوار السنية، ومنتخبات الفتاوى العثمانية الغزية للشيخ الطباع، التي توثق محطات هامة من التاريخ الاجتماعي والسياسي لفلسطين.
كما أشار إلى الجهود المبذولة في فهرسة المخطوطات وترميمها ورقمنتها وفق المعايير الدولية، بالتعاون مع المؤسسات ذات العلاقة والاختصاص، بهدف حماية هذا الإرث وصونه للأجيال القادمة.
وسلّط الدكتور أبو هاشم الضوء على حجم الدمار الذي خلّفته حرب 2023م، بعد استهداف مراكز حفظ التراث، وفي مقدمتها "قبة دار السعادة" وأجزاء من مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير، ما أدى إلى فقدان مخطوطات ووثائق تاريخية ثمينة، وإهدار عقود من الجهود التوثيقية والعلمية.

وقد أشاد بالجهود الميدانية التي تبذلها الجهات ذات العلاقة والمعنيين بحفظ التراث الثقافي الفلسطيني، حيث قامت مؤسسة عيون على التراث، بدورها في الحفاظ من خلال انقاذ ما تبقى من المخطوطات من تحت الأنقاض، مؤكدًا ضرورة توفير حماية عاجلة للمقتنيات المتبقية، وإعادة تأهيل المؤسسات التراثية، وإنشاء متحف رقمي يضمن حفظ ذاكرة غزة وإتاحتها للأجيال القادمة.

The Eyes on Heritage Foundation for the Preservation of Palestinian Cultural Heritage, in cooperation with the Turkish Presidency, held a lecture titled: "Gaza's Manuscripts: Memory of a City Between Destruction, Genocide, and Rescue Efforts."
The lecture was presented by Dr. Abdul Latif Abu Hashim, Director of the Eyes on Heritage Foundation, former Director of the Department of Manuscripts and Antiquities, and a researcher at the IREMEM Institute. He reviewed the historical and heritage reality of Gaza City, highlighting its scientific and cultural status and the importance of its manuscripts as an integral part of Palestinian cultural memory, as well as the challenges facing this heritage amid the destruction of heritage institutions during the war.
Dr. Abu Hashim addressed the historical and scientific status of Gaza City, confirming that it is one of the oldest cities in the world, with its documentation in historical records dating back to around 1500 BC. He also explained that throughout its history, Gaza was not merely an arena for conflicts, but rather a scientific and cultural centre that contributed to knowledge production and hosted scholars. It was associated with prominent figures, including Hashim ibn Abd Manaf and Imam Al-Shafi'i, and helped produce generations of scholars and jurists.
Dr. Abu Hashim also reviewed the scientific and historical value of the manuscripts, stating that they reflect Gaza’s historical memory through the valuable documents and knowledge they hold in multiple fields. He explained that the Great Omari Mosque Library formed the most prominent value of this heritage by housing hundreds of manuscripts and thousands of rare documents and endowments. He also highlighted several unique and rare manuscripts, including the Diwan of Ibn Zaqqa'a Al-Ghazzi, Al-Is'af fi Ahkam Al-Awqaf, Ma'arij Al-Anwar Al-Saniyya, and Selections of Gazan Ottoman Fatwas by Sheikh Al-Tabba', which document important milestones in the social and political history of Palestine.
He also highlighted the initiatives aimed at cataloging, restoring, and digitizing manuscripts in line with international standards, in cooperation with relevant specialized institutions, to protect this heritage and preserve it for future generations.
Dr. Abu Hashim highlighted the extent of destruction left by the 2023 war following the targeting of heritage preservation centers, most notably "Qubbat Dar Al-Sa'ada" and parts of the Great Omari Mosque Library. This resulted in the loss of precious historical manuscripts and documents, wasting decades of documentation and scientific efforts.
He praised the field efforts made by relevant authorities and stakeholders concerned with preserving Palestinian cultural heritage. The Eyes on Heritage Foundation played its part in preservation by rescuing the remaining manuscripts from under the rubble. He stressed the need to provide urgent protection for the remaining artifacts, rehabilitate heritage institutions, and establish a digital museum to ensure the preservation of Gaza's memory and make it accessible to future generations.
This lecture comes as part of the Eyes on Heritage Foundation's efforts and policy in preserving Palestinian cultural heritage, promoting awareness of the importance of manuscripts as a living memory of the Palestinian people, and shedding light on the scale of and historical destruction in City during the war.

شرعت مؤسسة عيون على التراث بتنفيذ مشروع "الإنقاذ العاجل لمكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير" حيث يهدف هذا المشروع الى ترميم وإحياء مكتبة الجامع التاريخية، وإنقاذ كتبها ومجموعاتها النادرة بتمويل من صندوق حماية الثقافة التابع للمجلس البريطاني، وبإشراف منظمة التراث من أجل السلام وبالتعاون مع دائرة التراث الإسلامي- وزارة الأوقاف والشؤون الدينية.
وقد تحدث الدكتور عبد اللطيف أبو هاشم مدير مؤسسة عيون على التراث عن أهمية هذه المكتبة وقيمتها التاريخية، بقوله" إن هذه المكتبة العامرة لم تكن يوماً مجرد رفوف تحمل كتب، بل كانت منارة للعلم، وملاذا للباحثين وطلاب العلم".
كما أشاد بجهود من سبقه في الحفاظ على المكتبة وحمايتها، وقد حرص منذ توليته هذه الأمانة خلال الأعوام الممتدة من عام( ١٩٩٤ حتى ٢٠٢٣ )على رعايتها وتجديدها وتزويدها بالكتب والمراجع من خلال الأوقاف، حتى استعادت مكانتها وأصبحت من أهم المكتبات التراثية في فلسطين.
كما ذكر د. أبو هاشم أن مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير قد تعرضت خلال الحرب على غزة الى استهداف الاحتلال في محاولة منه لطمس الهوية الفلسطينية، ومحو ثقافة غزة وتاريخها الممتد لأكثر من سبعة عقود، وأن مؤسسة عيون على التراث قد حملت أمانة الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي الغزي فكانت انطلاقة مشروع انقاذ مكتبة الجامع العمري النواة الأولى ليس لترميم المكتبة فحسب بل لإنقاذ ذاكرة غزة وحماية إرث انساني حاول الاحتلال محوه، وتأكيداً بأن الثقافة تبقى وان ما خطته أيدي العلماء عبر القرون لن تمحوه آلة الحرب والدمار.
وعليه، فإن مشروع "الإنقاذ العاجل لمكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير" يقوم على أساس تنظيف واسعاف الكتب والمجموعات، واعداد قاعدة بيانات لها ثم إعادة ترتيبها وتصنيفها كمكتبة عامة، وذلك في اطار إعادة دور المكتبة لاستقبال الجمهور، وإعادة احياءها لتعود مرجعاً للدارسين والباحثين وطلاب العلم على المستوى المحلي والدولي، حيث يأتي هذا المشروع ضمن جهود وسياسة مؤسسة عيون على التراث للحفاظ على التراث الثقافي والتاريخ.

He also commended the efforts of his predecessors in preserving the library. He has been dedicated to maintaining, renovating, and enriching it with books and references through the Ministry of Waqf since taking custody from 1994 to 2023. It reclaimed its stature as one of the important heritage libraries in Palestine.
Dr. Abu Hashem noted that the Great Omari Mosque library was targeted by the occupation during the war. This was an attempt to efface the Palestinian identity and erase Gaza's culture and history, which spans over seven decades. He emphasized that Eyes On Heritage has taken up the duty of preserving Gaza's cultural heritage. Thus, this project serves as the foundational base. Not only to restore the library but to rescue Gaza's collective memory and protect this human inheritance.
Consequently, the emergency rescue project focuses on the extensive cleaning and 'first aid' conservation of books and collations, creating a comprehensive database, and reclassifying them to function as a public library. This initiative aims to restore the library's capacity. This is to welcome the public and encourage them to continue to serve as a vital reference for scholars and students both locally and internationally. This project aligns with the core mission of Eyes On Heritage to save cultural heritage and history.
