Leonor Ribeiro pitched to win...
She walked onto the Falling Walls Lab Portugal stage with a microphone and walked off with a ticket to Berlin.
In just three minutes, she convinced both the audience and the jury that her research, "Breaking the Wall of Lung Cancer with Light", was exactly the kind of disruptive science the world needs.
That pitch earned her a place at the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, competing against 99 international semi-finalists for the title of Breakthrough of the Year. She describes the experience as a stimulating challenge, and a catalyst for both scientific and personal growth.
This year, Falling Walls Lab Portugal returns to INL, on 09 September.
We're looking for the next bold idea with the power to create real impact; in science and in society.
Could you be this year's winner?

Today we celebrate a culture that uses fado as its soundtrack, a language that uses diminutives to soften everything, and most of all, the people who make it all alive.
Happy Portugal Day!

The brilliant minds walking our campus today were once small in stature, but never in imagination.
Their dreams were always big enough to bring them here.
Here's to every child, and the wonder they never lose.
Happy Children's Day.

Our first International Day of Light celebration was back in 2016.
And we haven't missed a single year since.
Under the organisation of INL group leader Jana Nieder, we marked the event's 10th edition, last week.
What started as a moment to mark the occasion has grown into an anticipated annual event, bringing researchers and students together on campus to explore the frontiers of quantum science, photonics, and beyond.
This year's edition took on the theme "The Dark Side of the Moon", inviting participants to explore the fascinating interplay between light and darkness.
The afternoon featured talks on nanotechnology for space, quantum communication and computation with light, and materials for energy harvesting; complemented by lab visits, sunspot telescope observations, hands-on experiments, and even a quiz.
Ten editions in, the curiosity is still very much alive.
