Lindsey Vonn has been clear about what caused her crash in Sunday’s Olympic downhill, and what didn’t.

The incident came down to a narrow technical margin: she ran too tight, caught the gate, and twisted mid-air.

Replays make this evident. It was a racing error, not the result of past injuries. Lindsey has explicitly stated that her ACL injury and prior knee issues played no role in the crash.

That distinction matters.

Downhill ski racing is a sport defined by precision at extreme speed. Small deviations carry consequences, regardless of age, experience, or injury history.

This was not a case of an athlete ignoring risk. It was the inherent risk of the discipline itself.

Lindsey sustained a complex tibia fracture that will require multiple surgeries. She has said the injury is stable and that she has no regrets about competing, noting that she understood the dangers of racing when she stepped into the start gate.

Questions about her ‘taking a spot’ ignore that Olympic starts are awarded based on performance, not age.

The outcome was unfortunate. The choice to race was informed. Both can be true.
