Using expeditions for ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ ๐ studies๐
We are proud to share our newly published study in the Journal of Biogeography, exploring how climate change may reshape suitable habitat for 16 cetacean species across the Northeast Atlantic.
By combining years of observations from research programmes, citizen science, fisheries observers and whale-watching expeditions in the Azores with environmental data, we modelled how suitable habitat may change under future climate scenarios.
Under a high-emissions scenario, 12 of 16 species are projected to lose suitable habitat, with suitable areas generally shifting towards higher latitudes.
However, some regions are expected to remain suitable, highlighting the importance of understanding not only where habitat is lost, but also where it persists and shifts. Long-term observations at sea are essential for detecting and understanding these changes.
Every expedition can therefore become an opportunity to contribute to marine science.
