Well we had a lackluster Big Rock and Hatteras Marlin Club Tournament. We started out feeling pretty good caught a nice wahoo good enough for second place and a magnum size white one. Won a little money for our ladies, but then reality set in. We guessed wrong the first 2 fishing days were totally out of the bite. Then the last 2 days we managed to watch other boats catch some nice fish. When the smoke cleared we fished hard 4 days and never saw a fish in the baits. Then up to Hatteras for the Marlin Club. Pretty much the same story fished hard for 3 days never saw a single billfish. Needless to say we have some work to do and get ourselves back on track. During the Big Rock we took a lay day to pay our respects for Alva Don Stallings, the last picture is one I found of Don single handed creeking my Father when we won the Capn Fannie’s Tournament. Seeing that picture and others during the course of the week made us reflect on all the memories and friendships made over the years. For me on a personal level it was my 50th Big Rock, and I wish I could say I had 50 more left in me, but I don’t. Number 51 will be here before you know it and we are already counting the days. Congrats to all the winners particularly the Marlin Fever with their Big Rock record and Simple Man at the Hatteras Marlin Club. Up next for us is the Alice Kelly Tournament and hopefully we will have our issues ironed out and get back to seeing some fish.

This morning we found out the news that A. Donald Stallings had passed away. Don fished the Big Rock in the 70’s , 80’s, 90’s and even the early 2000’s on the Honey Hush. His boat the “Sea Eagle” was seen all over the East Coast from Puerto Adventuras to Chub Cay, the Hatteras Marlin Club, and all the way up to Cape Cod. One Don’s proudest moments was winning The Master’s tournament back to back and were it not for an equipment failure he would have secured a three peat. Don was a fierce competitor whether on the football field for his beloved Tarheels or the stern of the Sea Eagle. While we will miss our friend “The Sun bronzed, cigar chomping, Marlin murder, we can rest easy knowing he is reunited with his fishing buddy David Allen.
RIP “Coal Bucket” you will be missed.
On a more positive note Big Congrats to the entire crew of the Marlin Fever. Always great when you catch the right fish at the right time.

Just recently had the opportunity to fish on the Deceiver out Horta Azores. Spent a few days waiting out the hurricane. Had some slow fishing the first day but after that the pace picked up. In 5 days of fishing we ended up 8 Blue Marlins and 3 Big Eyes. A couple of the Blue ones were around 300 and the rest of them were in the 400 class saw a couple fish in the 500 class one that we pulled off and one that we never got a bite. All in all a great trip and a great Blue Marlin fishery. The Azores are a special place to chase Blue Marlins. Thanks to Captain
, , and for all the hard work putting us on the fish, and most especially thanks to Fin Gaddy for letting tag along it was a blast.

Just finished the Hatteras Marlin Club Tournament. Went 1 for 3 on the Blue Marlins. Some bad luck jumping a couple off but that’s part of the game. Congrats to the winners.

Big Rock 2023 caught 3 Blue Ones none of them worthy of a boat ride but had a blast catching them. Congrats to all the winners. Hope we get some better weather in 2024… now on to Hatteras Marlin Club Tournament

Wow what a week tournament. Started Monday with catching her first Blue Marlin. Then she went on to fight 3 more and catching two of those. She ended up winning Top Female Angler which also landed the boat in 3rd place for the tournament. Can’t tell you how proud we are of what she and the whole crew accomplished this week.

Got to give a shout out. We just finished fishing the tournament. This is the first time in 5 or 6 six years we were able to get out Hatteras inlet. Needless to say this has been a very frustrating situation. This year was a totally different situation and the credit goes to the local fishing community that worked so hard. Thank you for all your tireless efforts getting the dredge on site. Can’t say enough about how well the channel was marked by Captain Andy Piland. And last but not least Thank You Captain Rom Whitaker for showing the way through the channel safely. We can now say Hatteras is finally back and it’s because all the hard work many people in the community put in.
