Sharks can sense the tiniest electric fields in the water using 𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗶, jelly-filled pores around their snouts. The receptor cells detect 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, helping sharks 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘆, 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗣𝗦, and 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 🦈💙
This blue shark carries the marks of a global crisis.
🔴 The blue shark is the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 — up to 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 are caught each year, mostly as bycatch in tuna and billfish longline fisheries.
🔴 Their meat has low value but their 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: from ~17% of the global fin trade in the 2000s to 𝟯𝟰–𝟲𝟰% today.
🔴 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 are reported in several regions, especially the Atlantic where longline vessels and blue sharks overlap heavily. Capture levels may already 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻.
Without stronger international management, one of the ocean’s most iconic sharks could slip away. 🌍🦈

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀?
𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘃𝘀. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 🦈
Two pelagic predators, each adapted to a different lifestyle:
🔹 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘤𝘢) – slender, cobalt blue, up to 3.8 m. With 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲, 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 for surface and deep-water hunting, a 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 for fish and squid, and 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀 that let them glide effortlessly across vast distances.
🔹 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 (𝘐𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴) – more robust, silver-blue, and over 4 m. They have 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀 for sharp vision in changing light, and 𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗿-𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗵 designed to grip fast-moving prey like tuna, swordfish, and even other sharks. Their streamlined build make them the 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻, reaching speeds of 100 km/h.
Despite their differences, both face the same threats: 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, bycatch in tuna and swordfish fisheries, and increasing targeting for the shark fin trade.
Here in the 𝗔𝘇𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀, we are fortunate to encounter both species — and even share the water with them! 💙
