There’s something humbling about being forced to let go of strength.
Over the past few months I started rolling with my partner. She’s light, agile, and absorbs technique the way only a lifelong gymnast can. Nearly half my weight, so power simply isn’t an option. If I rely on size, I learn nothing.
So I had to return to something purer.
Leverage. Timing. Frames. Breath. Escapes.
At 52, it’s been a quiet revelation. When I stop trying to explode through every exchange, I don’t empty the tank. I recover faster. I train more. And that consistency compounds into something far more valuable than “winning” a round.
In training, at least, it’s not about beating your partner — it’s about improving your technique. There’s a big difference. One feeds the ego. The other builds the craft.
Our Mestre seems to have noticed. I’m rolling with browns, blacks, purples — and when the occasional young white belt wants to test the old guy, I give them positions and work my way out calmly. No rush. No ego. Just practice.
It’s slightly uncomfortable to look back at how often I tried to smash every partner. Maybe that’s why so many quit at white belt — they mistake domination for development.
Jiu Jitsu isn’t about imposing yourself.
It’s about refining yourself.
I feel like I’ve only just stepped into the shallows of a much deeper ocean.
And I’m grateful. Strength & Honour
