The pros of putting yourself out there and asking for what you want — whether that’s a podcast guest invite, writing an article for sizzling hot new publication, speaking on industry-renowned panels, or just asking someone to go on a walk and get an iced vanilla latte with oat milk tg — FAR outweigh the cons. and that’s the goddamn truth.

Everything you want is on the other side of a well-intentioned ask.

That’s why I teach this now. I refuse to watch another person live life in the passenger seat, opportunities floating right by them instead of grabbing a lasso and wrangling them in 🐎

MID-WEEK PEP TALK!!! 📣 one of the biggest gaps between where you are now and where you want to be is having the audacity. Point blank period.

It’s not your social following. It’s not your IG bio. And it’s def not your brand mission statement USP POV CTA ICA blah blah blah. You’re spending way too much time strategizing how everything LOOKS, and not enough time taking ACTION, making moves towards the spaces and people you want to be around most.

These are my observations after almost a month in London meeting and engaging with media personalities, creators, models, tech founders, podcasters, speakers and more… thoughts? 💭

That you don’t need hooks and tricks and trends to make an impact, you need to be in the right spaces and rooms where your message needs it most. Those rooms can be anything from your local library to host a workshop to London Fashion Week to interview ppl backstage.

That’s what I’m here to help you do. To become more audacious in taking up space and deeply believing all the rooms you want to be in, you can!! It all starts with positioning and a damn good pitch.

You’re constantly shooting your shot without even realizing it!

You post on an algorithm you don’t control. It could land on the Explore page. Go viral. Become the next think piece in The Cut or some cultural commentator’s TikTok. You could get discovered like Bieber on YouTube?!

You post, cross your fingers, and pray the algorithm gets the intention behind your hook, your design, your copy. Then *p**f* off it goes. Into the void. Through the feeds of your college ex, your snitchy old coworker, your festival friend from the playa in 2018, the people who’ll buy and the people who’ll lurk in the digital bushes forever.

You built that muscle! The muscle of letting yourself be seen by strangers with zero guarantee of what happens next.

That’s the hardest part of visibility! And you already did it 🤯

The Revolution is relational.

We need each other now more than ever. It’s okay. You can ask for help. You can put down the personal brand for a moment and remember your humanity. You’re a human before you were a business entity.

Go recharge. Flood your system with joy. We need you.

And with that, logging off to read a book and stare at clouds and call my family and voice note friends. I hope you do the same.

Connecting with humans >> depending on an algorithm. Swipe for my full anti-Meta biz plan!!!

I’ve talked about this on “The Art of the Ask” podcast — I have a guy in Cape Town who holds a spot for me every year, MONTHS in advance, with no contract, deposit, or hardball negotiations. We mutually benefit from linking up (I helped improve his place AND I’m a good tenant 💅🏽plus he receives consistent, predictable income from me) and I get to live in a dope place in the exact neighborhood I want.

We can de-center platforms like this when we learn the art of reaching out to others and developing relational skills. Bc look, if the power grid does down, does your neighbor know your name? Can you ask for help or vice versa? Get to know ppl outside the DM’s!

Copenhagen swept me off my feet and I wanted to stay longer. So I just texted the person I was house sitting for if I could stay while they were still out of town. The result? YEP. Paid $0 for the extension and was even sent a list of fun things going on that weekend.

Again… JUST ASK. Use your human words to ask other humans a favor and give yourself evidence the world isn’t a complete disaster. We do have an instinct to help ppl and we can practice by asking for it and giving it!

This ask was soooo off the cuff I actually forgot I even sent it! That’s how second nature shot shooting can become. I think I could get even more specific so I’m going to send her an email with my specific, fun, creative idea that’s mutually beneficial for BOTH of us. Stay tuned!!! It’s an in-person collab idea. I use Meta mostly for this DM feature but otherwise? I’m trying to GET OFF here as much as possible.

Shooting your shot is a bid to connect! It’s how we can band together, help each other grow meaningfully and sustainably, and honestly it’s way more fkn fun than making another Carousel if I’m being totally honest 👼

The big client. The sold out program. The book deal, panel spot, podcast guest appearance. Hell, even that cutie pie from the festival last weekend!

There’s never been a better time to learn the art of shooting your shot. With the boom of AI destroying relational skills, I’d argue it’s actually *necessary* if you’re here for the long haul.

This is a CENTURIES OLD tactic btw. Michelangelo did it. Joan of Arc. Fast forward. Jacob Tierney. Issa Rae.

Whether it’s asking to be paid vs. “exposure”, taking someone’s script and bringing it to life, acquiring funding for your creative project, getting a byline in your fave magazine, upgrading your project to a bigger scope, even lowering your interest on your credit card… it all starts with shots taken.

The best part? YOU GET TO DECIDE. You get to decide who to reach out to. Where your energy goes. Who sees what you’re saying. You get to stand in your worth and say “I’m doing something fkn cool. So are you. Let’s make s**t happen!!!”
