“Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in the morning sailors warning”

For thousands of years the human species has been studying and observing our experience of life. The yogis called this Svadhyaya (self-study)
This is our topic of reflection this week

To think how far we have come, for example the concept of floating on water with a boat. To foresee weather patterns in the near future. To make decisions to stay in a safe harbour or venture ahead.
As humans, our evolution has been incredible, yet there is still so much more to do. I don’t believe it’s in relationship to blasting rockets of into the atmosphere, or at each other. The true evolution will be how to bring peace, to overcome cultural divide, to unite.
I wish that this decade isn’t remembered by pandemic, war and cost of living crisis. That we still have a chance to turn it into something remarkable, a time where people come together, to help each other, to rebuild life and realise the incredible experience that we are all privileged to feel.

When we study our own thoughts and actions we can press them against morals and ethics, how does this help the collective existence? How does this help this earth thrive? 🌏

Side Crow/Crane Pose (Parsva Bakasana)

I remember the first time I saw a teacher sequence and do a side crow in yoga. It was a big studio in Richmond, Melbourne with about 50 people practicing. One teacher, 50 practitioners a 1:50 ratio. I didn’t have a clue what to do or modify to begin it. After 5 breaths she moved on to other poses. At the end of class, the teacher left during savasana so I never even got a chance to ask a question about the pose.
I realised at this point, how disconnected I felt to the teachings. The sequence was good but there was no real learning opportunity.
When I became a teacher myself, I vowed to always be available to students pre and post class to discuss their practice. To guide and support them in the challenges of practice~ physically, emotionally and mentally. That’s why teaching with a ratio of 1:10 has been my preferred option. 1 teacher 10 students. You’ll get a deeper experience the more closely you work with your teacher. Put people before profits and keep the depth of yoga continuing 🙏

We hope these posts of modifications can help you at home, just like our Asana of the Week biomechanics talk (mini-asana lab) at the start of each class helps refine your knowledge and practice.

Do you experience sharp pain during backbends? Lower back? Hips? Shoulder joint? Neck? In this particular case elbows, knees or wrists too?
Chances are something isn’t moving correctly. You shouldn’t feel intense pain in these kinds of postures. If you are, we will modify and check range of motion to see what’s happening & where.
The benefits of practicing in a smaller studio, you can discuss your practice directly with your teacher 🙏

Yin Yoga and Myofascial Release

Before starting yoga I had trained in dance and martial arts. I was used to gaining range of flexibility through long-held stretch practices. Often I could sit in the splits, looking to progress deeper, pushing heavily into pain and trying to ignore the signals from the body. This wasn’t healthy, not only can it be harmful, I was switching off pain signals and pleasure at the same time too. I would escape from my being in my body.

This is where Yin differs so greatly from a regular stretch class.
Yin taught me to stay present to my experience, not to distract myself. No TV, no social media, very little sounds. Just me, the sensations and the stillness.
Through practicing Yin Yoga, I learnt to sit in discomfort and be ok. I learnt to meditate and become mindful. I was able to unwind old habit patterns and re-write the internal dialogue.
It offered space for higher states of yogic practices.
~Zoe (Founder of MoY)

Yin has proven through research to help heal:
1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
2. Muscle or tendon strains and ligament sprains
3. Fascia adhesions from scar tissue
4. Skeletal posture concerns
5. Brain fog and fatigue
6. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
7. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

If any of these 7 conditions apply to you, come try it out…… you have nothing to lose.

We like to show you modifications on different bodies. It’s important that yoga remains accessible by all, less about perfect aesthetics, more about the subtle sensations of your experience.

What is the point in pulling off an incredible pose but you are in serious joint pain? That’s not what we promote at MoY. We’d rather see you focussed and deeply connected over a superficial surface level posture. You only get one body, use it wisely.

Modify Asanas to your body each day, to listen to it, to make micro adjustments, less performance oriented more pain-free longevity.
