Ethiopia is celebrating New Year today, on a calendar that runs seven to eight years behind the one most of the world uses.
It's not the only way time works differently here: traditionally, the Ethiopian day begins at sunrise, so while the world calls seven in the morning, it is "one o'clock" on the old Ethiopian clock. Modern travel runs on standard time, but the tradition still shapes daily life across the country. Did you know Ethiopia measured both the year and the day so differently?

Half the seats for this journey are already taken, and we haven't even reached the Danakil chapter of the story yet.

Fourteen days take you from the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to the ridgelines of the Simien Mountains, the Afro-alpine plateaus of Bale, and finally the Danakil Depression, where salt flats stretch to the horizon, and Erta Ale's crater glows. As with every ENT trip, the group stays small.
