The FIFA World Cup 2022™ First Sustainability Progress Report provides an update on the progress made by FIFA, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC in 2019 regarding their five sustainability commitments, including human rights, diversity and environmental protection.

“We are very glad to provide our stakeholders and the public with an overview of how much we advanced last year with the delivery of the Sustainability Strategy for the next edition of our flagship event. The report reflects our joint commitment to accountability and our drive to contribute to the evolution of best practices in the field of sustainability management in sporting events,” said FIFA’s Head of Sustainability & Environment, Federico Addiechi.

“It’s fantastic to be able to share the progress that Qatar and FIFA have made across the many critical sustainability projects connected to the delivery of the FIFA World Cup. Sustainability remains at the core of our infrastructure and tournament operational planning, and by delivering a fully carbon neutral FIFA World Cup through these various initiatives, we hope to set new standards for sustainable mega event hosting and cement one of Qatar 2022’s most profound legacies,” added the engineer Bodour Al-Meer, SC Sustainability & Environment Senior Manager.

Mahmoud Qutub, the SC’s Workers’ Welfare Executive Director, said: “We are driven by a commitment to ensure the people building our stadiums and venues are treated with the utmost dignity and respect. The health, safety and protection of our workforce have always been at the forefront of our efforts. These workers play an important role in preparing Qatar to welcome the world in 2022 and their welfare is at the heart of the legacy this tournament will leave behind. Tangible changes in worker standards on our projects now serve as benchmarks across Qatar and the region.”

Key achievements:

Al Janoub Stadium became fully operational, achieved its targeted sustainable building certification for design and build, and exceeded its targeted sustainable construction management certification.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ headquarters in Doha became the first office tower in the country to receive sustainable building certification for operations.
The majority of the Doha Metro network became fully operational, reducing road congestion, vehicle air and noise pollution.
Continued implementation of the SC programme to monitor compliance with its Workers’ Welfare Standards across all sites and expansion of the SC’s recruitment fees reimbursement scheme benefitted 16,500 workers on FIFA World Cup 2022 projects and 18,000 workers on other sites.
The first voluntary carbon-offsetting programme was established in the region.
Human rights and safety training was provided to over 2,000 police officers by Qatar’s Ministry of Interior in coordination with the SC’s security team.
Over 900 people participated in the tailor-made online open course on Sustainability & Major Sport Events.
An assessment was carried out of the tournament experience for disabled people and people with limited mobility at the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019™ and improvements were implemented accordingly.
FIFA’s Anti-Discrimination Monitoring System was implemented at all 168 FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying matches played in 2019.
Earlier this year, FIFA, Q22 and the SC also published the development process for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Sustainability Strategy. More recently, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) also released the FIFA World Cup 2022 Sustainable Stadiums report.

The organisers will continue reporting on their progress and publish a full Sustainability Report of the tournament in 2023.

Just two years to go until the next edition of the FIFA World Cup gets underway in Qatar on November 21, 2022. The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy is keeping no stone unturned to offer a unique experience during the first edition of the event to be held in the Middle East and Arab world.
In a first of its kind, the travelling fans will have the opportunity to potentially attend more than one match a day during the group stage, which will feature an exciting schedule with four daily fixtures, as announced earlier this year.
Work is in full swing and the infrastructure planned for the event has reached 90 per cent completion, with three stadiums already been completed – Khalifa International, Al Janoub and Education City. They have already hosted more than 100 matches in 2020 in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The state-of-the-art Doha Metro has been delivered and was successfully utilised by fans during the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2019. New roads and the expansion of Hamad International Airport is also going on, which is planned to cater to more than 50 million visitors a year by 2022.
“2020 has surely been a challenging year for the entire world, and football was no exception. Despite the difficulties, steady progress was made in the last few months, showing yet again Qatar’s strong and continued commitment – under the leadership of the Emir (Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani), whom I personally thank – to hosting an unforgettable FIFA World Cup in two years’ time, which will no doubt build a legacy long beyond 2022,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“Besides the very important labour reforms recently announced by the government, progress has also been made on stadium construction, along with the implementation of strict measures to protect workers’ health. During my short visit to Doha a few weeks ago, I witnessed first-hand how well preparations have advanced, and I am looking forward with confidence to Qatar 2022, for the transformative impact it is already having on the country and the region, for the unique experience it will provide fans from all over the world and, of course, for witnessing the best World Cup ever.”
H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, mentioned that the state of Qatar will be completely ready for the World Cup well in advance.
“We are immensely proud of the progress we have made over the last ten years. Both tournament and national infrastructure projects are well advanced, with everything on track to be completed well ahead of the big kick-off. Our legacy projects, meanwhile, are already having an impact on people’s lives in areas such as workers’ rights, education and entrepreneurship.”
“This is an incredibly important FIFA World Cup – for Qatar, the region and the world. Qatar 2022 will introduce billions of people to the Middle East and Arab world for the first time, and help to foster a greater understanding and break down stereotypes that people may have of our country and region. We’re very excited to welcome the world in 2022.”
All stadiums are located close to each other and will be linked by easy transport, which should result in short travel times for fans, players and media.
Most importantly, fans need not change their base throughout the tournament. The longest distance between stadiums is 75km (Al Bayt to Al Janoub), while the shortest is just 5km (Education City to Al Rayyan).
In July, it was confirmed that the opening match would be hosted at the stunning Al Bayt Stadium, a 60,000-capacity venue designed to resemble a traditional tent used in the Arab world. While the final will be held at the 80,000-capacity Lusail Stadium on December 18, 2022.

The airport expansion project will increase capacity to more than 58 million passengers annually by 2022.”

The Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup bid was a bid by Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With a population of 2 million people, Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup.[1] Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, son of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani the then Emir of Qatar, was the chairman of the bid committee.[2] Qatar promoted their hosting of the tournament as representing the Arab World, and has drawn support from across the member states of the Arab League. They also positioned their bid as an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Arab World and the West.[3]

On 17 November 2010, Qatar hosted a friendly match between Brazil and Argentina. This was one of 47 international exhibition games held throughout the world on this day.[4]

President of FIFA Sepp Blatter endorsed the idea of having a World Cup in the Arab World, saying in April 2010: "The Arabic world deserves a World Cup. They have 22 countries and have not had any opportunity to organize the tournament". Blatter also praised Qatar's progress: "When I was first in Qatar there were 400,000 people here and now there are 1.6 million. In terms of infrastructure, when you are able to organise the Asian Games (in 2006) with more than 30 events for men and women, then that is not in question".[5] On 2 December 2010, it was announced that Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.[6]
