Project Qatar, one of the region’s biggest building trade exhibition, kicked off its 10th edition yesterday with a press conference at The Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai.
It marked a significant milestone for Project Qatar, which has been gathering Emirati buyers, suppliers and decision makers from the construction sector to network, negotiate, and forge deals in Qatar for the past 10 years.
Attendees were told: "Over the course of a decade, Project Qatar has grown from a trade show to a strategic access point for reaching key industry leaders and sharing ideas in a country with a clear pipeline of projects and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Emirati companies share a strong history with Project Qatar and have grown their participation in the event over the years."
Speakers reinforced Project Qatar’s role as a key facilitator of trade ties and opportunities in the region’s construction equipment and building materials sectors.
“All eyes are on the Qatari construction market and Project Qatar is proud provide companies from UAE with a powerful platform that supports major transactions and growth in a key market,” said IFP Emirates General Manager Bassel Amaneddine.
“With record-setting attendance and overwhelming satisfaction among Emirati exhibitors each year, Project Qatar and IFP – together with Dubai Export and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry - have become strong partners, empowering companies in the GCC to grow their businesses.
"We are grateful for the continued participation of key players such as Emirates Steel – our Gold Sponsor – and welcome their presence as evidence of the quality and results Project Qatar delivers for its exhibitors.
"With a 2,100 square meter national pavilion, the largest at Project Qatar for three years running, and participation from Emirati exhibitors such as Valbruna Gulf FZE, Unique factories, SAYES, SIMCO, Hadelay, Gale Pacific and many others who have attended Project Qatar for several years, we celebrate the UAE’s participation and commitment to Project Qatar as we enter our 10th year.”
Mohammed Ali Al Kamali, director of exports markets development for the Dubai Exports Development Establishment, organiser of the largest national pavilion at Project Qatar, said: "Trade between Qatar and UAE has reached massive values over the last decade, suggesting growing complementary business relationship.
"The UAE participation in Project Qatar is always considered as the biggest participation, and we at Dubai Exports participate and organise the UAE pavilion on a yearly basis and it is one of the biggest exhibitions in our agenda every year.
"Project Qatar is offering a great business platform to UAE companies. Project Qatar provides immense business opportunities for UAE companies."
Mohammed Al Amin, assistant director for economic and international affairs at Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said: “The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce & Industry helps Sharjah and Emirati companies realise new opportunities in key markets for their top quality products.
“Sharjah Chamber members see Project Qatar as a key event. This is why SCCI is proud to take a new step this year by supporting UAE’s national pavilion and the prosperity of its members by partnering with Project Qatar to move our companies and both markets forward.”
Meanwhile, Mubarak Al Khaili, senior vice-president of marketing at Emirates Steel, said that it was participating in Project Qatar for the sixth time.
“We believe that this exhibition is an important event for us. It has offered us many opportunities and this time we also plan to showcase all our range of products for visitors to view."
He added that the event "is growing every year in a market poised for exceptional growth in the present decade and it is very good business to be present here.
"The benefit of being here at Project Qatar is to have direct contact with end customers and we were satisfied with the response we received in last year’s edition.”
Mohammad Mustafa Abdul Aziz, senior trade xommissioner of Matrade, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, said: “The participation of Malaysian companies at this event is aimed to further forge more partnerships and joint ventures with local Qatari authorities and project owners to undertake projects in Qatar.”
Meanwhile, the executive director of the Thai Trade Centre, said that it was "proud to be a partner of the Project Qatar 2013 exhibition.
"The Thailand Pavilion for Project Qatar 2013 will be represented by top executives from across the spectrum of the Thai building materials, furniture and electrical industry.”
Ms.Simona Autuori, deputy trade commissioner of the Italian Trade Commission, said: "The Italian Trade Commission, Trade Promotion Section of the Italian Embassy, covering the UAE, Oman and Qatar, is proud to be part of Project Qatar once again, having co-ordinated since 2004 the presence of Italian companies involved in construction and building materials.
"Since that year, in fact, Italian companies have kept exploring the immense opportunities offered by Qatar, which plan now to invest at least US$ 200 billion in infrastructure development over the next decade.”
Saman A. Naziri of the Swedish Trade Center said: “Given the size of the population, many multinational companies and brands have their origin in Sweden.'
He added that Swedish companies "are in the forefront of technological developments and have a lot to offer Qatar in sectors such as transport and infrastructure, ICT, clean tech and renewable energy".
"We believe that successful business operations are built on knowledge, long-term commitments, mutual benefits and good relations which is why Project Qatar is an excellent platform for Swedish companies to meet and network with the Qatari business community.”
Rosario Millan, director of Extenda, said: “Extenda, the Trade promotion Agency of Andalusia-Spain, is promoting for the first time the participation of five companies from Andalusia in Project Qatar 2013. Andalusia is the most populated and largest region in Spain and exported above €25bn in 2012, which means a growth of 9.12% from 2011.
"The Middle East is a priority market for Spanish companies and Qatar, with its high economic growth and big projects, offers very attractive business opportunities.”

DO YOU KNOW about the news in Abu Dhabi ????
Abu Dhabi has taken over from Dubai as the place in the Middle East region with the most shopping centre space under development, according to a new report.
The CBRE report states that Abu Dhabi is currently one of the top ten retail development markets in the world, with 825,000m2 currently under construction across nine schemes, including the 235,000m2 Yas Mall site being developed by Aldar, as well as the new Galleria shopping centre in Sowwah Square set to open later this year.
Seven of the other top ten cities in terms of new shopping space are in China, with Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul making up the remainder.
The report indicates that "both cities have seen huge growth in their retail economies due in part to the boom in shopping centre development but also to the rapidly-expanding tourist industry.
"More recently, new shopping centres have become larger with leisure attractions becoming an increasingly important part of the mix," it added.
"Bowling, cinemas, ice rinks and amusement areas are now commonplace and have created ‘destination’ centres that have also become social meeting points, particularly among the young local population.
"This has created a new dynamic with shopping centres evolving into a place to be, not just to shop."
In Istanbul, 32 new shopping centres are under construction, although many of these are "in peripheral locations where the city is expanding.
"The inner city will undergo substantial redevelopment over the next decade, as a raft of buildings are due to be demolished (badly built/too old/no permit).
"This should provide limited opportunities for small scale retail developments in the central area," it adds.
