⏰ : Labour Day - or the day we forgot the fight for 8 hours?
140 years ago, workers stood together for one simple demand:
➡️ 8 hours of work.
Today, extended hours, constant connectivity, and unplanned overtime have quietly become the norm.
📌 According to NEBOSH principles,
long working hours and lack of recovery are real psychosocial risks - directly linked to:
-stress
-burnout
-declining mental health
👉 Protecting mental health at work is not a benefit.
👉 It is a core occupational safety responsibility.
On 1 May, it’s worth asking ourselves:
❓ Are we managing work - or letting work manage us?

🕰️ A Short History of 1 May
1886 - Workers in the United States launch strikes demanding an eight‑hour workday.
1 May 1886 - Mass protests take place nationwide.
4 May 1886 - The Haymarket Affair (Chicago) becomes a symbol of the workers’ struggle.
1889 - The Second International declares 1 May an international workers’ day.
1890 - The first International Workers’ Day is officially celebrated.
20th century - The eight‑hour workday is gradually adopted into labor laws worldwide.
Today - 1 May is both a public holiday and a reminder that the fight for safe, healthy, and balanced work is still ongoing.

🧐Why Safe Day Matters
-Every year, millions of workers worldwide are injured or fall ill due to work-related causes.
- Safe Day reinforces the message that all occupational accidents and diseases are preventable.
- It promotes the idea that safe and healthy work is a fundamental human right.
📌Purpose of World Day for Safety and Health at Work
Safe Day aims to:
✅Promote prevention of occupational accidents and diseases worldwide
✅Encourage governments, employers, and workers to take responsibility for workplace safety
✅Highlight emerging risks (such as new technologies, climate-related hazards, or psychosocial stress)
✅Commemorate victims of work-related incidents with dignity and respect

📜Origins of Safe Day (28 April)
-Roots in Workers’ Memorial Day
-The observance began as Workers’ Memorial Day, first marked by trade union movements in 1996.
-The original purpose was to remember workers who lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses due to unsafe working conditions.
-The date 28 April was chosen symbolically to honor victims while also reinforcing the need for prevention.
🤝Adoption by the International Labour Organization (ILO)
-In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO) officially established World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April.
-The ILO expanded the focus from remembrance to active promotion of workplace safety and health, emphasizing prevention, education, and policy.
