Want to get deeper in your forward fold?

Or maybe you just want to touch your toes!

SWIPE and SAVE for tips! —————————- Forward folding is a stretch do your WHOLE posterior chain - basically everything on the back side of your body. So if you just thinking about your legs you’re missing half the picture!

Swipe for my top ways to help improve your forward fold - by lengthening the whole posterior chain from neck to ankle!

A fun fact:

A lot of these are not just PASSIVE movements but ACTIVE as we’re using the muscular engagement of the opposing side (your anterior chain - abdominals, hip flexors and chest for example). By contracting your opposing muscles like this you’re:
- allowing the lengthened muscles to release and open more effectively, as the body feels safe going into the range of motion.
- You minimise INJURY as you’re only going into a range which your body can actively move into
- you gain FULL control over your range of motion! So it’s useful in life and not just a party trick! 22/10/2020

Today’s “tutorial” is not so much a How To then a Behind the Scenes of Triangle Pose. I am obsessed with triangles, the architect’s strongest polygon. It holds the character of strength, structure and stability. Right angles hold up, equilateral triangles emulate strength.
.
This pose belongs to the Warrior family. As a warrior is couragous and skillful, he is also determined and has a lot of willpower. In your physical practice you manipulate the back leg to be your anchor, stabilizing the whole posture. Your front leg is your rudder & leads you through the stormy sea. Your lower body is your stability, your foundation to hold ground. Your upper body is your ability. In your spiritual practice you are internally fighting for liberation and vision.
.
▶️ Back leg is straight, foot is turned out 45°
▶️ Heels down, pinky edge finds the mat. Find the ball of your big toe
▶️ inhale, lift your chest, turn your rib cage up
▶️ both arms are straight & perpendicular to the mat
.
😍use a wall for leverage and measurement to find your plumb line. Place your feet a feet width distance away from the wall (depends a bit on your bum).
❗️Never compromise a pose for flexibility. If your hamstrings are not ready yet BEND your front leg as much as you need to. Personally I don't like to use a block here. I like to have options. If you want your triangle to evolve start at the bottom. No need to be stubborn here 😉..
.
Anything but a determined warrior aka common habits
📍Back leg is not engaged, the outer corner of the foot loses the contact, arch collapses
📍front foot collapses, front knee point inwards, closing inner groin
📍hips are not centered
📍upper body is carrying all the burden hence it is not able to turn
.
🔥Flip your bottom hand 180° to refine & reorganise your collarbones which frames up the lungs.
.
Let me know if this is of help for you 22/10/2020

✨How to Open Shoulders✨
.
.
.
.
.
Open shoulders are beneficial for lots of things - backbends, handstands, overhead extension, counteracting the hunched/forward shoulders position of every day life, etc ~
Here are some of my favorite shoulder openers you can incorporate into your practice!
.
.
.
1. Down dog
2. Dolphin
3. Standing forward fold with clasped hands behind back
4. Thread the needle (from table top) - option to half bind top arm around low back + switch sides
5. Tricep stretch
6. Gohmukhasana (cow face) arms - take a strap or towel if you can't bind hands quite yet! + switch sides
7. Fists behind back
8. Grab opposite elbows behind back - switch crossing
9. Reverse prayer
10. Child's pose with reverse prayer
11. Puppy dog
12. Puppy dog with chest and armpits completely on the ground (this is a great chest opener as well)
13. (in any pose) Gate arms and squeeze shoulderblades together
14. Camel - getting into the backbends 😉 but this is a great shoulder/heart opener when you're sufficiently warm
15. Bow pose - another backbend, kick back into feet for more of a chest/shoulder stretch
16. Shoulder circles with strap or towel (I'm using a resistance band here) - to lubricate the shoulder joint before deeper openers/backbends! 22/10/2020
