Yves and the team had woken up very early that morning for training, as we usually did. Our plan was to ride from Muhanga to Ngororero District and then make our way back.

Everything was going well until we reached Bulinga. Somewhere along the road, Yves crashed after hitting a Beam crash barrier, and the situation immediately became frightening. We rushed him to Mushishiro Hospital, hoping they would be able to treat him there. However, after examining his injury, the doctors told us that it was too serious and that he needed further medical attention. They then referred and admitted us to Kabgayi Hospital.

Honestly, it was one of the scariest moments I can remember. Seeing Yves injured and not knowing how serious it would become was terrifying. At one point, I was genuinely afraid that he might lose his leg and that the doctors would have no choice but to amputate it.

But somehow, things turned out differently. God works in mysterious ways. What looked like a terrible situation at the beginning eventually became a story we could look back on with gratitude.

That day reminded me how unpredictable cycling can be. One moment, you are riding with your teammates, training and enjoying the road; the next, everything can change in a matter of seconds. I will never forget that day, the fear we felt, and most importantly, how grateful we were that Yves made it through.
